European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 28, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 b the stars and stripes tuesday january 28, 1992 super bowl xxv Blitz play developed on bus ride by Joe Gergen new Day Minneapolis a if there a one facet of football at which the Washington redskins truly Excel its preparation. The game plans presented to the offence and defense Are detailed and thorough and invariably successful. The paper Trail leads to head coach Joe Gibbs and Richie Petitbon the assistant head coach for defense. But even with two weeks to get ready for a game something occasionally is overlooked. Its also a Mark of intelligent coaching to be flexible to act on an impulse. For the redskins the trip to super bowl xxvi ended with a bus ride to the metronome sunday. It was during that ride that the staff put the finishing touch on what would become a resounding 37-24 Triumph Over the Buffalo Bills. According to Petitbon defensive coordinator Larry pc Catillo suddenly asked Quot Why done to we Blitz up the Middle a to Petitbon it was a sudden Flash of Light on a Gray Winter Day. A we never practice it a the Man said after the game a Small smile on his lips. No matter they designed the route for linebacker Andre Collins at halftime. A they were bringing me on blitzes in the first half but when i dogged i had to cover Thurman Thomas key to Victory if he slipped out of the Backfield a Collins recalled. A at halftime they took that responsibility away and gave Thomas to a defensive end. We gambled a and they won. On the first play from scrimmage of the second half Jim Kelly dropped Back to pass. Collins came cleanly through a Hole in the Middle and Thomas circled out of the Backfield. Collins paid him no mind and bore Down on a surprised Kelly. The quarterback barely released a rushed throw Over the Middle for tight end Keith Mckeller. It landed in the arms of linebacker Kurt Gouveia who accepted the present and returned the interception 23 Yards to the Buffalo 2-Yard line. A one play later Gerald Riggs slowed into the end zone and 16 seconds into the third Quarter Washington had padded a 17-0 halftime Lead to 24-0. The Bills would never recover. A i done to think the score sealed it a Gouveia said a but it certainly helped our to Petitbon it was the single biggest play in a game of big plays by his defense. The redskins played against Type blitzing from All angles with a shifting cast of characters. They got sacks from such unlikely figures As Reserve end Jason Buck and Reserve tackle jumpy Geathers and Reserve cornerback Alvoid Mays in addition to starters Wilber Marshall and Fred Stokes. They also placed so much pressure on Kelly that he threw four interceptions two by safety Brad Edwards and one apiece by Gouveia and pro bowl cornerback Darrell Green. They left the no huddle offence in shambles. A we came a lot More than usual on blitzes a Collins said. A usually we re More conservative especially when we get ahead. But we wanted to take away the run and put a lot of pressure on Kelly. They were leaving five Guys to Block six so we gambled. Week in and week out our coaches Are creative. They never do the same thing and sunday they resorted to a scheme even they Hadnot seen in practice. A i think we attacked the line of scrimmage More than usual a a Petitbon said. A we dogged a lot. We wanted to clog up the holes the gaps. We afford any mental the redskins not Only outhit their opponents they out thought them. A some weeks we get our game plans and think a this is so comprehensive a a said Edwards who played two seasons for the Minnesota Vikings in this very stadium before he was acquired by Washington on plan b. A but the coaches really work with us and we have a smart group of Guys. They always make the right Calls and we just have to s detractors need new material a hic map Mark Rypien lets one Fly during his personal super sunday. By Hal Bock Minneapolis a Mark Rypien had heard the whispers criticism that he win the big one. A let the critics say what they want a Rypien said sunday after winning the biggest one of All the super bowl and its map trophy in Washington a 37-24 rub out of Buffalo. A i done to hold grudges. Maybe they were right. Maybe the criticism helped me make the right decision. Maybe they made me address them and make myself a better player. A but you know what they can to say that anymore. They can to say he did no twin the big one. If there a one bigger than this one i Haven to heard about Rypien completed 18 of 33 passes for 292 Yards and two touchdowns. He said the key to his Success was keeping this big one in some perspective. Quot i was dumbfounded with the Way i handled the whole ordeal Quot he said. Quot i never lost my composure. I did t get tied up in it. I did things the same Way i do every week tried to keep some normalcy. I got Here Early today got a Chance to think about what was going after that it was business As usual. Even when the redskins came up empty on a drive that died at buffaloes 2-Yardmvp line in the first Quarter Rypien said he Wasny to concerned. A we had a Good feeling a he said. A we knew we could do some things make some big ones too. Big enough to get the map trophy that has gone to some great quarterbacks Over the years Hall of Farmers like Terry Bradshaw Joe Namath Bart Starr Len Dawson and Roger staubach a fast company a Guy who has never seemed to fit in with that crowd. A what this Means is that i did a lot of Good things today things to help this team win. That a the More than that it was a gift from Rypien to a team that has 13 players Over the age of 30. For some of them this May have been the last time around. A for All of us we can strut around for the next four or five months with the idea that we re the Best in the game. We can take it everywhere. A for me there were 45 maps. You done to know what will happen next year. I doubt All these Guys will still be if they re not always have this game and this super bowl a Day the quarterback they Call rep gave them. Redskin posse had picnic in Bills secondary Minneapolis apr the pass catching posse won the super bowl shootout sunday. Gary Clark Art Monk and Ricky Sanders had a picnic in the Burtalo secondary in a 37-24 Washington Romp that was constructed largely through the air. Clark was the major culprit picking apart cornerback Nate Odomes for much of the game and climaxing the mismatch with a 30-Yard touchdown catch in the third Quarter that opened the Lead to 31-10. The drive started with a 6-Yard pass to Clark then a 10 yarder and then a 16-yarder. Was there a pattern Here Quot i caught a couple and that fired me Clark said. Quot you Alwa Swant to score. When you get to the end zone you do what you re Able to do that a what i work at first Clark said Mark Rypien a pass seared him. A i get my Chest up a he said. Quot i had to use Only instars of the game hands. I had to make the catch. "1 done to have a lot of Speed but my quickness makes up for it and gets me past Guys. They were mixing zone and Man coverages. I did t it was Clark s seventh catch of the game and gave him 114 Yards receiving. Monk also had seven for 113. Lai her it seemed Monk would get them All on Washington s first drive. At 34, he is the elder statesman of the posse so Oil in aet. He was there when the redskins w hideouts were called the i in Bunch. 1 hmm about it Monk said. A a i he Odds Are against of to play in tour super bowls. To play in one in your 13th season that s re ally something Quot As the redskins moved Down the Field on their second Possession Monk looked like a kid again catching three passes from Rypien the games map. Monk started the drive with a 12-Yard reception ther caught Back to Back passes for 19 and 31 As Washington rolled to the Buffalo 2. Monk then made a leaping catch in the end zone for a apparent touchdown but the score was reversed by the replay official who ruled that Monk did not have both meet Down in the end zone. It was a temporary interruption for the posse. Sanders caught a 41-Yard pass setting up the first Scon of the game a 34-Yard Field goal by Chip Lohmiller. It we his Only catch of the Day but for Clark it was washing ton s most important. Quot when Ricky caught that Ball that got us started again Quot Clark said
