Or. Sakurauchi a comments about american workers and subsequent comments by a former Trade minister regarding american business managers reflect a widespread belief that goes far beyond the boundaries of Japan. If the United states is Able to sustain the very Best military in the world with All its High tech innovations with american workers and managers we Are certainly capable of accomplishing the same with other industries. Yet our business political and labor leaders have Long mismanaged our resources reaping expedient rewards while ignoring the Long term costs to our country. The japanese people have sacrificed much to make their country the economic giant it is today. Anyone who has been in Japan can attest to the exorbitant Cost of living and the frenzied Pace of its industrious work Force. Japan must act responsibly As it assumes a leadership role in the global Economy and americans need to a Wake up a not simply to mend the superficial wounds from a a a bashing War but to treat the deep rooted ailments of our Economy. A Kosuke Vasquez Frankfort German angry at Congress in a tired of the military a being used by Congress As the Scapegoat for the problems that face americans. Yes cutbacks Are needed. Congress Only for election purposes intends to strip the military dry. Why not its easy. It is simply sick. Congressmen Are cheats. They lie next to us in War and yet in peace they Cut our hearts out. Why can to Congress take a Cut in lawmakers pay to help the Economy wait i forgot. Lunch is too much a priority a not Justice for the people. There once was a great Empire called Rome. There once was a great country called America. A sgt. Lisa a. Wiese maastricht Netherlands gambling with career i thought that gambling was illegal in most places but now in the air Force it seems As if they re making me Gamble a with my career. I must choose Between taking an Early out and running with the Money or taking my chances with being forced out during a a reduction in somehow i just done to like my options. I came into this air Force under the Assumption that i would be in for 20 or More years then retire and go on to something else. I volunteered to come into the service nine years ago. Now they re trying to a Volunteer me by giving me these choices. In be got some ideas on this subject of trimming the armed forces. Since this was supposedly an All Volunteer Force let anyone who wants to get out get out. If too Many want to then look at factors to determine which ones stay and which ones go. Done to have people who want to stay in the service make the Choice obviously they already have or they have been around this Long. 1 know they now have a High year of tenure but there Are some e-7s, e-8s and e-9s around who have no business still being in the military. Get those people out if they be been in 20 years. Let someone else make rank and fill those slots. There a plenty of us out there. There a also some e-3s and e-4s who want to get out but Arentt eligible. Let them out if they want out. Obviously the ones who Are willing and Able to do the Best Job possible for the service will want to remain. I done to like having to make this Type of Choice with my career. I feel in be had a Good career up to this Point and want to continue for another 11 years. So i guess ill take that Gamble and take my chances that in a better than 50 percent of my Peers in my career Field. I could get better Odds in downtown Las vegas. A staff sgt. They say we Are Lazy and poor workers. I done to think these things were meant to be malicious just observations. We americans like to think of ourselves As an industrious people but Are we Arentt we taught in school that to be successful you Are to strive to be a professional then if you Arentt smart enough learn a Trade. Who Are our heroes an Assembly line worker one who earns his living by the sweat of his brow or is it the business Mogul the Star athlete the movie Star or the Rock Singer americans perceive hard work physical As a last resort not something to be proud of. I believe this is what the japanese Are trying to Tell us. Maybe we should listen. Everyone can to be Michael Jordan Donald Trump Kevin Costner or Michael Jackson. But our teachers and those in control of much of our thinking and learning prompt us to be overachievers in business sports arts and entertainment. These Are All Fine and to be enjoyed. But there is a time to work and a time to play. How Long can America continue to play maybe its time America went Back to work a a most honorable profession. A sgt. Michael Greer Friedberg German words of support needed we re still Here. This is in response to a Comfort troops got More and to All of its responses. While everyone is bickering about who got More and who had it worse troops from desert storm and operation provide comfor please take a moment to remember that there Are still 1,398 american service members As quoted from the Jan. 7 stars and letters to the editor stripes deployed to Turkey in support of operation provide Comfort. Dodds just Laid off 85 local hire teachers in the Middle of the school year. At a teacher student ratio of about 25, that Means More than 2,000 students were affected. Now if local hire teachers earn about $2,000 a month they Are not entitled to housing allowance or col that Means $170,000 a month was saved or about $1 million for the next six months until the end of the school year. That $1 million for six months is less than what one automotive executive would earn in the same period. There is something drastically wrong Here. Do you suppose Japan would gut its educational system to save $1 million when 2,000 of its students do better in math and science than the 2,000 Dodds students who Are affected by this a savings a what will our excuse be a Japan took unfair educational advantage of us now of course Dodds and our a a education president will Tell you that laying off those teachers wont have any effect on the children or on the Quality of education but anyone who believes that probably also believes that the Best Way to help the . Economy and american Consumers would be to have them Stop buying High Quali. To Toyota and hondas and instead have them buy a a Quality Chrysler so that Lee Iacocca can earn $5 million a year. A Michael Peterson Rhein main a German blame kids and teachers Andy Rooney recently made a comment on 60 minutes that american students Are Lazy. I am a Junior enrolled in Heidelberg High school and i agree with him. There Are too Many students who care less about learning. In a class discussion on this same topic we got onto the topic of illiteracy. I asked if an average student has 28 teachers in his High school career Why then Are there so Many illiterate people in the United states today the response was the laziness of students. I agree that students Are becoming Lazier but not All the blame should be put on the student. I blame the teachers and administrators also. With an average of 28 teachers in four years of High school alone Why Are there so Many illiterate people i am tired of the students taking the blame. We need teachers in our school system who care enough to help these students instead of passing them for the remaining 27 teachers to handle. The students need to realize that this is a rough world and a Good education is needed. It is time for kids to Stop playing around. It is also time for the teachers to realize that there is a problem with our education system and the High rate of illiteracy. A Melissa Thorpe Heidelberg Germany
