One company memo dated March 9, 1971, told of a new Orleans patient who experienced irritation in her breast about four months after receiving an implant following a Mastectomy. On two occasions the doctor treating her prescribed penicillin for what he diagnosed As an infection. The irritation went away and then came Back. After the third occurrence the doctor found a the irritation had lacerated and the fluid was oozing from the wound a the company memo said. The doctor then removed the implant and found it a was partially empty of gel and what gel was there was extremely fluid and oozed out of the prosthesis and the surrounding tissue a the memo said. The memo said that the doctor was afraid of being sued for malpractice and added that he had done at least a dozen similar operations without a problem. The company acknowledged that silicone gel in the body causes problems. A testing completed to Date shows that the primary observed effect of silicone in the body is that of the classic foreign body reaction a Dow Corning said.
