By Ira Berkow i loved watching magic Johnson play again in the National basketball association All Star game sunday afternoon but i had hoped before the game that he would not play in it. I was sorry he played in it and i Hope that he does no to play As he hinted he might in another game of professional consequence and that includes the olympics. It was different even from when he announced with dignity on nov. 7 that he had contracted his the virus that causes aids and would have to retire from the lakers and basketball. After sundays game in which he was named the most valuable player a something we All knew he would get unless the roof caved in a he said that it proved a Point that a people with this virus can live  to me it proved Only that magic Johnson is a great basketball player. Something he did no to have to prove again to anyone in the world. And Only eight months after All since he last demonstrated it in the Aba finals. It also showed that magic Johnson like so Many great athletes finds it painful to give up the spotlight. That was part of the sadness for me. In his insistence on playing in this game there was also for me a sense of if not irresponsibility on his part then of the self serving. It is asked if you Are going to keep people with aids from playing basketball then Why would you take any risks like flying in an air plane the reason is you have an alternative to flying and that is driving or boating. It is also True that one  isolate or stigmatize those with aids. A doctor for example chooses to accept such patients but he protects himself the Best he can by wearing rubber gloves for one thing. Boxing referees have also taken to wearing such gloves. Unless a Boxer is tested and found not to have aids there is a communicable risk for the other men in the ring. A Cut can be a conduit for allowing in the other Many a blood into his system. We know that medical workers have contracted aids in this manner. And at least one nurse has contracted aids when blood from an infected patient squirted into her Eye. Should a boxing referee then Wear goggles too something to reasonably consider. Should All athletes be tested for communicable diseases something to consider. A question but if you re not going to play against someone with aids then should you play against someone with say tuberculosis the answer you should not or at least not be required to by the league or an olympic committee. Magic Johnson can Lead a nearly full life As Long As his health holds. He can run and jump and play Tennis and make speeches but he  play sustained competitive basketball. His doctors Nave told him that but for the Sake of his health. He and governing bodies should also decide that for the Sake of others As Well it is time to undo his basketball sneakers for the last time.
