During biblical times shepherds used their rods As a form of guidance for their sheep. Guidance is the prominent Issue. They did not Quot Knock the sheep Over the head with a stick in order for them to follow orders i have worked in a family counselling program where Many horrible abusive incidents against children have taken place. Often Many religious people turn to this biblical scripture to justify their actions. Often this justification is not questioned a after All Why should Counselor begin discussing biblical texts i am sure the Bible is not advocating the infliction of pain on any human being. I am a steady believer of guidance. Explain things to your children no matter what age they Are. If you believe that a slap on the hand or buttocks is necessary it is also necessary to communicate and guide. One without the other is sure to fail. Consistency is also the key. One must remember that no one has mastered How to raise children. Be open to suggestions. Different techniques work with different children. A Jovanna Barriteau Berlin a a talk with your child in response to the letter a the Rod has its place a the writer makes the statement that telling lies is a child a nature. This could not be further from the truth. A child lies to avoid punishment which is often in the form of spanking. If parents would sit Down with children and discuss with them what they have done wrong and explain Why they have done it instead of automatically punishing them children would have no need to lie. Maybe if the author of the letter had taken any parenting classes or child development courses then she would know this. Vicki Allain Mannheim Germany a a a Bush push too late figures As of Jan 13 indicate a jobless rate at 6.8 percent the worst figure since the 1981-82 recession. As a matter of fact some economic advisers consultants Are calling the United states economic woes a a contained if it were not for some specific Federal insurance organizations the present economic situation could be labelled As equal to or greater than the great depression of the 1930s. The Bush administration says the Money saved from military cutbacks May be used to Spur the Economy and in turn bring Down the jobless rate. However what the administration does t seem to realize is that the Money from the cutbacks is coming from the soldiers As Well As equipment. The soldiers Are in a sense being Quot Laid this creates a higher jobless rate and the Money the administration plans to use to Spur the Economy will not go As far because no one can actually live on what the military pays its thus in the Long run there will be a higher jobless rate than the Al ready High 6.8 percent. The Bush administration wasted too much time on world affairs and not enough time dealing with the problems at Home which continue to grow now that an election year has rolled around again the administration is frightened by the polls showing a whopping 74 percent of the voting Public do not approve of the presidents economic policies at Home or abroad and 61 percent Are willing to try a Democrat in the White House. So the administration is offering Middle class tax cuts expanding government programs and government assistance programs. The a Bush push for another four years May be in fact too Little too late. The military vehicle i sat in had lost the drive Shaft and was As we say in Germany kaput. Luckily another Soldier was with me and had gone to get help. That is part of the reason i am writing. The other part is the fact that i had six cars Stop in a half hour to Render some Type of help and guess what All of them were americans either civilian or military. I am truly amazed at the generosity and compassion that we americans have for people we done to even know. In be been in Germany for three years now and i guess i forgot that most americans Are kind and helpful to those in need. Ill be going Home soon but i will always remember the lesson that was re taught to me that Day. Hats off to the american military and civilian workers Over Here in germ by. You Are definitely one of a kind. For those who stopped to help me i want to say thank you for reminding me what America is All about and reminding me of All the Good things ill be going Home to. A spec. Christine a. Jensen Hochst Germany a a a proud to serve red Cross i read with interest the letter about the american red Cross. There Are few things in life As rewarding As helping another who is in need. Through my arc casework position at Keepfer fab miss., i had the privilege to be Able to do just that. We serve not for thanks but the fact that someone later remembered a helping hand showing we have done our Job Well. Our purpose in the military Community among other things is to serve you a to ensure in times of emergency that your emotional and financial needs Are met and that things go smoothly through the emergency leave process. I Hope to be Able to continue my service Over Here although i cannot speak for every red Cross worker i know i speak for Many and As that voice i offer this. The red Cross staff and volunteers who Are among the very finest have been proud to serve you and look Forward to continued service in the future. A Anne Owen Sembach a Germany a a let car buyer beware in a recent edition you published a letter from a Reader who purchased a new car in Europe and then found out he could have bought the same car for $2,000 less in the states. Just the other Day i was in the office of my car insurance Agency and was a witness to another financial toss for an unwitting Soldier. In this instance the Soldier and his wife were attempting to get an explanation for a settlement of a claim following the total loss of their 2-year-old car through an Accident that was not their fault. The insurance company of the other Driver paid them for their toss. That is they were Given a Check for the current Market value for their totalled car. The problem for the Soldier was that he had financed his car for five years and had three years remaining to pay off the loan. The amount of the Money received in settlement was less than the amount he still owed to the Bank. As a result the Soldier still had several thousand dollars left to pay on a car that he no longer had. The moral Here is that anyone contemplating the Purchase of a new car whether Here or at Home should make every Effort to find out How much the car he or she is thinking about buying depreciates in the time that he or she intends to finance the car. You can ask the dealer to show you the official used car Price guide a yellow however i have found that is the one area where you wont find dealers forthcoming. My suggestion is to go to your local base or Post Library or even to your car insurance Agency that is if its not also a car dealer and ask to see the Price guide. Look at the value of the car and Model for the previous two to three years. Some cars lose up to 50 percent of their initial Cost in just two years. I recommend that if you must have a new car you should try to put Down enough Money As a Down payment so that you do not end up owing Money on the car you no longer have in the event of an Accident. A Michael Maguire Wiesbaden Germany 86no laughing matter i thought the so called joke about lawyers in a recent letter was in very bad taste. I am proud to say my husband is a lawyer. He worked hard through Law school and is now a judge advocate for the . Air Force. I done to know if you Are a military member or not but if you Are then the next time you have a Legal problem think about your joke when you go to the Legal office. A Beth l. Johnson Izmir Turkey
