European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 23, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 23, 1992 the stars and stripes b Page 29 prep Pickin sold track records won t fade away if records As they say Are made to be broken it is about time that some of the track and Field standards be removed from the Dodds annals. No fewer than 15 Dodds a 10 boys Marks and five girls achievements a records Are ancient on the books for at least 12 years. The oldest record is the boys 100 meters which was originally set by Kaiserslautern a Clyde Wooten with a 10.6 clocking in 1963. It has been matched five times. Oddly enough the oldest girls record also is in the 100 meters the Mark of 11.8 was set by Nairn bergs a son dra Thomas in the Southern regional and was tied in the 1975 All Europe championships the next week when Frankfurt a Brenda Givens nipped Thomas at the tape in a thrilling race for the championship. _ All the girls times distances and Heights were records in 1975, because that was the first year that girls athletics in Dodds had been elevated to interscholastic status. Previously the girls competed under the auspices of the girls athletic association mostly in the form of Field Days instead of a regular weekly program. Frankfurt a Doug Henderson and Kaiserslautern a Alonzo Babers Are the leading individual old timers on the books with a pair of records apiece. Henderson a Are in the Long and triple jumps at 23-8 and 4811 i respectively set in 1974. Five years later Babers who went on to Star at the air Force Academy and won the 400 meters in the 1984 olympics set the standards in the 200 and 400. Ben Abrams he was clocked in 21.5 in the 200 and 47.7 in the 400 in the 1979 championships. Babers had a spectacular meet those two Days in the championships at Munich. Both his individual records came in fridays preliminaries. Babers also anchored the red raiders record setting victories in the 400-and 1,600-meter relays. He teamed up with Erwin Stone Rocky Rice and Greg Pritchett for a 42.5 clocking in the 400 relay prelims and then combined with Rice Todd Scott and Kent Minich for a 3 24.2 time in the 1,600 relay finals. The 400-relay record still stands but the 1,600 has been sur planted. Other oldies but goodies in the boys individual Competition include a 14.4 by Harry Smith of Berlin in the 110-meter High hurdles in 1972, the shot put Mark of 57-5 by Baum older a Robert Young in 1978, the 38.2 clocking in the 300 intermediate hurdles by Baum older a Tony Tolson and the 161-6 discus toss by teammate Ron Arnold both in 1980. 1980 was a Banner year for records a the rest of the girls Long ago Marks were established that year. Wurzburg a sprint Medley team got into the preliminary record setting act in 1980 when Lydia Kay Colleen Hayes Veronica Hayward and Sabrina Dornhofer turned in a sizzling 4 14.6 clocking to break by 10 seconds the record they established the previous week in regional Competition. Dornhofer also had set the 1,500 and 3,000 meter records in the regional and she re established the 1,500 Mark in the finals. Both stood until of cent a Liz Wilson erased them in 1986. The stars of 1992 still have three weeks of regular season Competition before they can set their sights on records but they re going to need a lot of help from the Weatherman. The weather was quite Nice March 21, but the track and Field luminaries did no to begin their Competition until the next week when conditions were not so Nice to put it mildly. Then came a two week Layoff with decent weather and last weeks return to action a in freezing rain and High winds. Things it seems should get better since May is just around the Comer. Obviously there weren to Many big changes in the Honor Roll with the weather so horrible. Bonne a Tracey Losi made her 1992 debut in the 3,000 meters after having competed Only in the 800 and 1,500 previously a and she leads All three Honor Roll categories with clocking of 2 25.0, 4 53.0 and 10 53.0, respectively. Only one other athlete Mannheim a Ericka Farmer leads in two events. She has a 12.8 in the 100 and a 27.0 in the 200. Ramstein a Teri Duthie is second behind Losi in All three Distant events. Hanau Santonio Pena first in the boys 3,000 and second in the 800 and 1,500 and Wei Brucken a Stephanie Jones first in the High jump second in the triple jump and third in the Long jump Are the Only other competitors on the Honor Roll three times. A a a the Germany soccer races Are beginning to heat up. The Heidelberg girls and Owci Brincken boys both 4-0-0, carry the Best conference records into this weekends strife. Heidelberg has aaa engagements with Ramstein saturday. The Ramstein boys Lead the league with a 3-0-1 record Heidelberg is 2-1-1. Wiesbaden which plays out of conference is 3-0-0. The Ramstein girls Trail Heidelberg by one game so this weeks action carries a lot of weight. Other Blue plate specials match the Pitburg and Patch girls both 3-0-6 in a warfare and and the Baum older and bad or Cugnach girls both 2-0-0 in a North strife. The Star and draft by Thomas George new York not the Way a National football league team views each draft often depends on the particular Vantage Point. If you Are the Dallas cowboys and have two picks in each of the first three rounds then this years draft looks Rosy. If you Are the Minnesota Vikings and have no picks until the fourth round then this is a draft full of potential but also one with few players who can make an immediate Impact. Draft Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder. But there Are areas of consensus about the 1992 nil draft Here sunday. If you Are a team looking for a boost in the offensive and defensive lines and in the secondary then this draft is for you. Also this draft is strengthened by 34 College juniors who left school Early. Nil scouts Sav the first four selections will probably of All juniors and All defensive picks Washington defensive tackle Steve Emtman Wisconsin cornerback Troy Vincent Pittsburgh defensive end Sean Gilbert and Florida state cornerback Beauty is Terrell Buckley. Plan b has helped change the Way that teams View the draft. Plan b and the draft Are now the primary ways that teams improve their personnel and using both in complementary ways is a Tricky task that few teams have mastered. The super bowl Champion Washington redskins won the prize last year when they acquired a Bushel of starters gained via plan b and then drafted adeptly by selecting tailback Ricky Ervins. Pure Talent had always been at the forefront of nil draft philosophy until a major push in the 1980s placed a Premium on a draftees character As Well. Now teams have added another criteria How quickly a draft pick can be signed. For those teams seeking immediate help watching a top draft Choice miss All of training Camp because he remains unsigned has become less tolerable. Now teams spend As much time researching if a player can be quickly signed As they do zeroing in on his 40-Yard time. A look at the teams who could be some of this drafts prime players eyes of these teams have two picks each in the first round Indianapolis Washington Miami Dallas Green Bay and Atlanta. These teams have no first round picks Minnesota Phoenix Tampa Bay Philadelphia and Houston. Dallas is in the Best position for draft Day deals and would love to have Vincent or Buckley to help mend a pass defense that was the team s weak link last season and one that was exploited mercilessly in the playoffs by the Detroit Lions. This is the fourth draft for coach Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones the owner of the cowboys and both men have become known Tor their Wheeling dealing ways. Last year the cowboys traded their Way up to the spot and grabbed defensive tackle Russell Maryland and kept dealing until they finished with 17 players in Only 12 rounds. Look for Dallas to Deal not so much for players in this draft but to solidify its draft positions for the future. It is also an important draft for the san Francisco 49ers. After All of the bumps and bruises the 49ers have endured Over the last two seasons All eyes Are on the beholder 49ers to Sec if any draft magic remains. With three proven quarterbacks in Joe Montana Steve Young and Steve Bono look for Bono or Young to be dealt possibly on draft Day. Are the raiders interested the raiders say that Todd Marinovich is at their training site already preparing for the 1992 season but privately they Are concerned about his reportedly failing a league drug test after last seasons playoff game loss to Kansas City. The raiders want quarterback insurance and if it Isnit Young or Bono Odds Are they will find a quarterback on draft Day. The Indianapolis Colts by virtue of their 1-15 finish last year own the no. 1 pick and via a 1990 Trade of quarterback Chris Chandler to Tampa Bay own the no. 2 pick too. The Colts first pick depending on whether they can sign him before the draft is Emtman. Their second pick remains unclear. The Colts Are leaning toward Texas a amp a linebacker Quintin Coryatt Wisconsin cornerback Troy Vincent and Michigan receiver Desmond Howard. Coryatt now leads the pack As the Colts lean More toward defense
