The Cathedral was founded in 752 As a simple Chapel. Part of the Cathedral s Interior is being renovated but that does t diminish the overpowering Beauty of the Chapel s choir area. There Are 13 60-foot-High stained Glass windows that Are magnificent examples of medieval Glass painting. The Walls Are lined with skilfully carved wooden gothic choir stalls. The remains of St. Severus the Bishop of Ravenna were brought to the site beside the Cathedral in 836 and the St. Severus Church was erected As a Convent Church in 1280. Today it contains a Stone Madonna a 50-foot-High baptismal font and the Limestone Tomb of St. Severus the sides of which depict the Saint s life Story. Other Art treasures such As altars panel paintings and a candelabra dating from 1160, line the interiors of the churches. On a Hill adjacent to the do Hugel sits the remains of the Royal monastery of St. Peter a the former Church of a Benedictine monastery. The site was the Citadel of electoral Mainz from 16&4 to 1707 and is now known As Petersberg. It is an excellent place to View the entire City. The Market Square Down the Hill from the churches is a Hub of activity from Early morning to Mii afternoon monday through saturday. The Dom Platz Market is dominated by fruit vegetables and Flowers and several food stands. It is there that you Wilt find a state treasure a the thiringer bratwurst. A freshly grilled Thuringer Wurst with Brotcher is the Best lunch Deal in town for 1.50 Marks about $1. There is one other must see sight in Erfurt a the , or International Market gardening exhibition. In the 18th Century the Fertile land that brought Prosperity to the town by producing Woad was turned to growing Flowers. Christian Reichardt who lived from 1685 to 1775, is remembered for scientific seed growing and cultivating new varieties of Flowers. In the 19th Century the Flower growing Industry became the City s economic Backbone. A the first Iga was held 50 years ago. Today on the grounds of the Cyriaks Burg Castle Are 250 acres of manicured grass fountains statues and Flowers a lots of Flowers. Tulips daffodils lilacs and dozens of others. Its size and Beauty easily rival the famous Keuken Hof Flower Garden in Holland. The Castle rebuilt in 1664, is now a museum that focuses on Erfurt s Market gardening tradition.
