European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 4, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse Life takes a siesta beneath beneath the Spanish sky clockwise from above Olive Trees Blanket Hilts near Granada the Spires of Carmona silhouetted at Sunset a Lazy cat relaxes near mor6n a Farmer makes his Way along an andalusian Road while a Shepherd keeps an Eye on his flock a wind battered tree stands alone near naval station Rota. Since Montana has already Laid claim to the name Quot big sky country a Southern Spain must be the Quot country of the big endless Waves of andalusian land Roll under a magnificently empty sky in this last Frontier of a people choked european Mainland. There seem to be More abandoned Adobe farmsteads under the Sun than Farmers in this lonely Plain. But every 10 Miles or so you see signs of Lile a Distant smoke smudge rising into the Pale big Blue. Dust from a plow floating across the land or the shiny reflection of a Man made Structure somewhere up in the rugged Hills. Out Here in this great wide open the clop clop of a slow moving mule pulling its master s creaking cart of Olive branches briefly disturbs the steady sound of silence. But like the Ripples from a Rock thrown into a tranquil Pond the sound gradually diminishes As it is absorbed into the vast cloak of sky it s a Good thing the spaniards Haven t figured out a Way to Harvest the Ocean of Blue above them the Way they be blanketed much of their soil in Orange and Olive Trees. For a while at least this part of Spain will remain steadily silent As wide open As the wanderer s imagination.
