The research project known As the superconducting super Collider had been included in a $21.8 billion spending Bill that provides Money for the Energy department and for an assortment of waterway Protection projects. An amendment that called for shutting Down the project leaving Only $34 million to phase out activities was approved 232-181. It was a stunning defeat for supporters of the project who had expected that the $48.7 million contained in the Bill for the Collider would be approved. Energy Secretary James d. Watkins said in a statement he was a deeply disappointed by the House action. It docs not demonstrate Good stewardship of our nations scientific and technology research base that the Public has entrusted to the  the research facility would consist of a 54-mile Oval Tunnel in which subatomic particles would be accelerated to nearly the Speed of Light and smashed together. Plans envision More than 2,590 of the worlds scientists eventually using the facility in the search of Basic clues about the fundamental Structure of matter.
