Bush had 1,122,608 votes or 44 percent while Bill Clinton had 1,103,716 votes or 43 percent. Ross Perot had 353,845 votes 14 Tennessee allegation or 14 percent. Sen. Bush won 479,552 votes or 50 percent in Complete returns. Bill Clinton won 391,461 votes or 41 percent and Ross Perot had 83,728, or 9 percent. Rep. Jamie Whitten a Whiten Democrat who was elected to Congress a month before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor won re election even though he is 82 and ailing. Sanford blamed his loss on negative campaigning and heart surgery three Weels ago that kept him from doing much Active campaigning. Eva Gayton and fellow Democrat Melvin Watt became the first Blacks elected to Congress from North Carolina in this Century. With 98 percent of the precincts reporting Clayton had 68 percent of the vote to Republican Ted Tyler a 32 percent. Watt with 96 percent of the precincts reporting had 72 percent of the vote to Republican Barbara Washington a 28 percent. With 99 percent of precincts reporting Hunt had 1,352,637 votes or 53 percent to 1,108,549, or 43 percent for Gardner. New state auditor Ralph Campbell became the first Black Ever to win a statewide office. South Carolina democratic sen. Ernest f. Hollings narrowly won a fifth full term and Democrat James Clyburn became South Carolina s first Black congressman in a Century. Rep. Liz Patterson a Democrat was upset by Republican Bob Inglis in her upstate race. Four other incumbent congressmen were re elected. President Bush captured the states eight electoral votes. With returns nearly Complete Bush won 569,065 votes or 48 percent to Bill Clinton a 474,052 votes or 40 percent. Ross Perot won 137,022 votes or 12 percent. Hollings 70, a former governor first elected to the Senate in 1966, survived a Strong Challenge from former rep Tommy Hartnett. Hollings had Hollings 582,410 votes or 52 percent to Hartnette a 546,407, or 48 percent in nearly Complete returns. Clyburn beat Republican John Chase in the newly drawn 6th District in the Eastern part of the state to become the first Black since 1897 to represent South Carolina in Congress. About 58 percent of the districts population is Black. Virginia virginians broke two political barriers electing the states first Black congressman in a Century and its first congresswoman Ever. But president Bush continued one political tradition keeping the states 13 electoral votes for the republicans. With almost All precincts in Bush had 1,122,046 votes or 45 percent to 1,007,757, or 41 percent for Bill Clinton and 339,197, or 14 percent for Ross Perot Black democratic state sen Robert c. Scott Defeated a Black Republican in the 3rd congressional District which stretches from Richmond to Norfolk and was designed to maximize the Black vote. The states last Black congressman John Mercer Langston served in 1891. In the 11th District a new seat in Northern Virginia Democrat Leslie Byrne Defeated Republican Henry Butler to become the states first congresswoman.
