Whatever cold weather sport you prefer a skiing hiking Hunting fishing or another pastime a it is Likely that sometime you have gotten chilled outdoors. When people died from cold in the old Days it was generally assumed that they had Frozen to death but what kills Long before the body freezes is hypothermia. People can die of hypothermia at temperatures Well above freezing. The term Means a below Normal body temperature. The risk of hypothermia is increased by three main environmental factors a Low air temperature wind and water. The Way to avoid the risk is to protect yourself against these Adverse conditions. The most obvious Protection is proper clothing. Dress warmly and in layers. Remember that most fabric will not protect against the cold if it is wet. Wool is one material that does retain much of its insulating ability when wet. But it is always better to stay dry. If it is raining Wear a Waterproof outer layer. And keep your feet dry. There Are Many Good Waterproof hiking boots on the Market. Some of the Best Are of silicone treated leather or Gore Tex both allow body moisture to escape while preventing outside moisture from getting in ii you will be standing or wading in water Wear hip boots or waders. Neoprene waders will keep you warmer than old fashioned insulated rubber or lightweight Nylon versions. Wear a hat. Studies have shown that humans can lose up to 60 percent of their body heat through their Heads. Eat Well. Food is the fuel that keeps your body s fires burning. If you skimp on meals they will Burn lower and you will get chilled More easily. Conserve Energy. Fatigue reduces your body a ability to maintain its Normal temperature. Another simple precaution is to carry one of the space age style metallic blankets Quot sold in Many camping and sporting goods stores. When folded they fit easily into a shirt pocket. But when opened up they Are Large enough to wrap around a person. They Are designed to insulate by reflecting body heat. Shivering is one of your body s protective mechanisms against hypothermia. If you Start to shiver do something to get warm. Get to shelter. A House a car or other Structure if possible. If there Are no buildings or vehicles nearby try to find a tree Rock or some other natural Protection. Or build a fire. Don t take foolish chances. A Hunting or fishing trophy is not Worth gambling your life for. If you get wet do not continue on just because you done to want to spoil your buddies fun. Get Back to the car House or hotel and change into dry clothes. If you get badly chilled find help before it is too late. Hypothermia can impair your speech coordination and judgment. If you encounter a hypothermia victim get him to a warm dry place. Serve warm liquids. If he is stumbling slurring his words behaving strangely or unconscious he needs medical attention. Remember the threat of hypothermia is greatest in Quot Winter but it can occur at other times of the year. Winter is traditionally a time to reminisce about seasons past and to plan for the ones to come.
