God bless court papers link aide to search of Clinton files by the los Angeles times Washington a investigators have found evidence that White House political director Janet g. Mullins helped encourage and direct the search of Bill Clinton a passport files court papers disclosed monday. The documents were filed by attorney general William p. Barr on dec. 10 to support his request for an Independent counsel in the Case. The papers do not specify the nature of the evidence. But the evidence was weighed by a special three judge panel that then named Joseph e. Digenova to pursue the probe. The file search took place on sept. 30 and oct. 1 As Clinton was running against president Bush. It came during a period when republicans were attacking Clinton a anti Vietnam War activities As a student at Oxford University in England in 1969-70. There also were rumours that Clinton had sought to renounce his . Citizenship to avoid the draft. In the order the judges directed Digenova to consider six possible felony violations by Mullins including whether she conspired with a one or More other persons to commit any Federal offence. The undisclosed evidence appears to Challenge an initial report by Sherman m. Funk the state department inspector general. Funk had said he could find no indication that the White House had orchestrated the file search. However it could not be determined whether the evidence Barr cited was additional material that Secretary of state Lawrence s. Eagleburger said was uncovered and sent to a appropriate authorities after Funk a report was issued or whether the evidence was turned up by investigators conducting the preliminary inquiry that led to Barros decision to seek an outside prosecutor. Barr and the special court made no explicit mention of White House chief of staff James a. Baker Iii Mullins longtime Boss or another Baker associate Margaret d. Tutwiler White House communications director. Both Baker and Tutwiler were questioned for Funk a report and have retained criminal defense attorneys. Digenova said in an interview that a those who Are being investigated Are and will be presumed he declined to estimate How Long the probe will take. However Digenova has sharply criticized the Independent counsel Law. He particularly has criticized the length of investigations conducted by outside prosecutors. In Barros application to the court he noted that Mullins twice denied to Funk a representatives that she knew of or participated in the search.
