I think we re working together Well the new Pentagon chief said sunday in one of his first interviews since taking of while differences of opinion exist Between the Clinton administration and the nation s military Lead ers some common ground is being found and he wants to hear the military s Point of View. We do want the military to give us its honest opinion. And we want to hear what they have to say honestly on the in Side Aspin said adding quickly on the other hand if the president makes a decision we expect it to be carried Aspin who developed president Clin ton s Campaign plan for slashing $60 Bil lion from the Pentagon s coffers in the coming years spent his first weeks in of fice wrestling with an explosion of Mili tary opposition to lifting the ban on Gays rightist group defies ban in Germany Frankfurt Germany a de spite a ban on its activities and anti rightist demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of germans Over two months one Neo nazi group is thumbing its nose at the government. Late sunday one of two government to networks broadcast a clip showing Deutsche alternative holding a recent meeting in a hotel near Cottbus in East Ern Germany. With several German police officers in uniform shown sitting in on the meeting apparently to Check on Neo nazi activities group Leader Frank Huebner grinned As he entered with other known Neo nazis. Police made no arrests because the group had changed its name the report said but did t say what its new name was. The Leader admitted recently he would avoid restrictions by reorganizing the group under a different name. Interior minister Rudolf Seiters in a National radio interview sunday said there Are at least 41,400 Radical rightists in Germany about 6,400 believed to be according to official reports there were 2,285 violent Radical rightist attacks reported against foreigners jews and leftist Ger mans last year resulting in 17 deaths. Thatis a 54 percent increase Over 1991, Deutsche alternative is known for flouting regulations for example the nazi Salute is banned in Germany but the group has devised ways of masking the straight gesture while dancing. Police cannot arrest group members who commit no obviously illegal acts. The program on Ard television showed the group singing Deutsc tend veer Alles the Anthem of nazi Ger Many it also showed tables covered with Neo nazi Reading material that called for Germany for the germans Loreign group is one of four groups banned by the Interior ministry in de Cember for propagating hatred and trying to incite the Public against foreigners jews and leftists. The Ard report came a Day after beit ers said Radical rightist no vember had subsided primarily because the government had stepped up its Campaign against such groups and because germans have taken to the streets by the hundreds of thousands in anti rightist demonstrations. We do want the military to give us its honest opinion. And we want to hear what they have to say honestly on the inside defense Secretary Les Aspin in the armed forces. The joint chiefs of staff including chairman army Gen. Colin l. Powell All came out against it. But in an interview with reporters re turning from a weekend conference in Germany Aspin argued that the military was doing its Job in expressing its views albeit within certain Bounds. Aspin Sard any attempt to portray the joint chiefs recent outspokenness As open rebellion against the administration and against a commander in chief who never served in the armed forces is asked whether he believed the Mili tary s highest ranks were attempting to scuttle administration proposals or were attempting to influence the National de Bate on military matters Aspin responded i Don t think that for a in fact Aspin said the military and the army in particular has begun to respond to his Call for reducing the num Ber of troops in Europe to 100,000 by 1996. The army is rethinking its timetable. Far budget reasons they themselves might want to accelerate the Pace a Little bit Aspin said. Despite moves in Congress to Cut the deployment in Europe which reached a Peak of some 350,000 troops at the height of the cold War the Bush administration and military officials staunchly opposed cutting troop strength for years. But Aspin said the military is changing its approach on a number of matters. He said he thinks the nation s military Structure sees Clinton As a moderate president Clinton and his secret service Shadow jog in the East Potomac Park on monday. Clinton s run spares commuters _ Washington a president Clinton gave commuters a break Mon Day morning when he took his jogging entourage on a different route avoid ing the City s main traffic arteries. Clinton was later than usual for his morning run leaving the White House at 7 30, dangerously close to prime commuting time for the thousands of people who drive into the nation s his 10-car motorcade took him to Mains Point an isolated Peninsula that juts into the Potomac River where he ran three Miles in 24 min new jogging path was a Wel come change for commuters Many of whom were left tied up in traffic along some of Clinton s other routes. Democrat whose views on military mat ters Are not out of the Range of things that they think is within the acceptable boundaries of what is consistent with our National Security As proof Aspin said he expected the Heads of the services to respond in just six Days to his direction to Cut Between $8 billion and $11 billion from the fiscal 1994 budget plans which were due on his desk monday. Military leaders would t be Able to re Spond so quickly he argued unless the had begun to Deal with the reality of Clinton s approach to military spending. The reason we can put a six Day time limit on this budget exercise is they be Arcady been thinking about it. In fact they be been thinking about it Ever since election Day he Saia. But that is not to say that deep disparities do not exist Between the uniformed leaders and their new civilian Bosses Aspin . We need to work All of this out and we will work on it he said.
