European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 25, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday. February 25, 1993 the stars and stripes Page 17 Izetto dear readers _ one of my pet peeves is charitable organizations that give Only a tiny fraction of the Money they collect to charitable work or medical research. In the past few years my mail has been full of complaints from people who have been solicited by such groups. Recently i received a letter from Marjorie Siegel a research assistant at the charities review Council of Minnesota a croup that provides factual information about which potential donors in Minnesota can make their own charitable giving decisions she gave me a list of charities represented by direct consulting today s crossword Ann Landers response consulting services which used to be called Watson amp Hughey. According to docs my previous columns had nothing to do with the name change i was so some of my generous readers were being taken advantage of that i Drew my own conclusions from the information provided by Siegel and other readers and added them to her letter. At that Point i should not have used her signature since i had added my own thoughts. This was an error on my part which caused considerable embarrassment both to Siegel the writer and to her organization the arc which does such splendid work. Siegel is absolutely right when she says the conclusions about a few charitable organizations were not made by her or her organization. So i hereby apologize to Siegel and the arc. However i do not retract in any manner shape or form my previously stated views that a handful of charitable groups spend the vast bulk of Contti Butch dollars on administrative costs and very Little on charitable work. I should add that one of the groups named in my Rob. 4 column the american Institute for cancer research should not have Beert included. It informs me that 66 percent to 72 percent of its contributions do indeed go to cancer research. I say Hurrah for them. If any of you wish to know More about this organization or make a contribution the address i american Institute for cancer research 1759 r st., . Washington . 20009 there is nothing illegal in asking people to contribute to charities that give very Little Money to charitable work so Long As that fact is disclosed even though it appears in Fine print. But neither is it illegal for me to warn my Loyal readers that they would be stupid to give their hard earned Money to such groups. In my efforts to protect my readers however i should not have implied that docs or the Organiza Lions it represents were doing anything unlawful. But As a life Board member of the rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and the american cancer society i feel so strongly that the bulk of every Dollar of my readers contributions should go to the people who really need it that i went a bit too far. So dear readers get out the wet Noodle. Ill take my 40 lashes. Letters to Ann Landor should be addressed to her at . Box it562, Chicago. To. 606vi -0562. C creators Syndicate. Limit on child s bathroom visits irks mom dear Abby my child who is in the third Grade at a Public school came Home the other Day because he had wet his pants. After questioning him i Learned that a a Bobby so teacher allows each child to go to the restroom Only twice a Day. Bobby had to go a third time and was refused permission. Abby please warn teachers that if a child is abusing restroom privileges his parents or guardian should be consulted. And if the problem persists the child should be seen by a physician. No child should Ever have to soil him or herself because of some arbitrary classroom rules. In a signing my name but please done to use it a As my child has several years of school Leit and i done to want him to have any problems. Outraged Mother dear Mother i too was concerned after Reading your letter. So i consulted the director of paediatric urology at Chil quibble dear Abby Drin a a Hospital in Philadelphia or. John w. Duckett or. Here a what he had to say a i agree that children under the age of 8 should be Given free and unquestionable Access to the bathroom but they should also be Caref Tilly monitored. A about 5 percent of children at age 7 years have a medical problem called Volding dysfunction. These children need medical attention since they urinate either too frequently or not frequently enough. If teachers notice any particular child who needs to visit the bathroom More than two or three times a Day that child s parents should be alerted to a potential problem. A in a study involving four continents and 2,000 children children were asked to rate the 20 most stressful events listed for them. The top three were losing a Par Cut going Blind and wetting their pants in class. Children Are indeed embarrassed by wetting and or soiling themselves by 7 years of age. However teachers Are certainly attuned to the needs of children and allowing children beyond 8 years of age to randomly go to the bathroom without medical reason would Only create a chaotic letters Tor this column should be addressed to Deer Abby at .
