Residents on and off base already face a variety of water restrictions As a result of Low water Levels last year. And now in response to this year s dry spell the Spanish government has asked for tighter restrictions including an additional 10 percent reduction in water consumption. The problem started during Spain s october 1991 april 1992 Rainy season according to capt Jim Allen the base s Public works officer. By last february the Reservoir held Only so percent of its More than 350 Mil lion gallon capacity. The Normal water level at that time of year is usually 80 percent to 90 percent. Last March the confederation a Branch of the Spanish Federal government asked local cities and the naval station to reduce water consumption by 20 per cent to make up for the shortfall. Spanish towns in the area did not fare so Well in con serving water and the 7,500 americans working at Rota who live off base have had to adjust to stricter measures. Water supplies off base now Are turned off each night at 9 and turned Back on each morning at 7. Jeanne Yeager a . The tanks hold 5 Gallons to 7 Gallons of water bricks added to the tanks displace 1 gallon to 2 Gallons and can represent a significant water savings. According to Allen bricks can be obtained at the self help facility on base. Installing water saving devices on Shower Heads and taps in base housing. Some restrictions including the ban on Lawn water ing took effect this week.
