European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 26, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse 8is Ronick Ney Brian Perkins and always James same Elliot Simmons and Adam Komich won Over the Tough crowd. Boo Bird Field Day at Apollo showcase a Showtime a is Ron Mckinney of an and Rish a Hudley performed far beyond their Ages 5 and 7 years. By Ron Mckinney entertainment writer it was a wild night even before the first performer took the stage for the it s Sho time at the Apollo showcase last month at the Alpine no club in Giessen Germany. People were scrambling for chairs for the Amateur night performance that Drew a boisterous crowd conservatively estimated at about 1,000 by by tit official Andrew Morgan. The show opened nearly a hour late with the Apollo s Singer Joe Gray the event s special guest. The tone was set immediately when he was greeted with Boos Midway through his song. Raucous crowd reactions Are a trademark of Apollo theater events. The Competition began with Phaze one singing first time Lover or something like that it was hard to hear the lyrics Over the chorus of Boos and what with Guys in the crowd jumping out of their seats so their jeers could be heard and their thumbs Down could be seen. Marion sugar Bear Hardwick attempted an a Cappella number that just did t work. Like the group before him he was booed off the stage. When the third performer a a White Guy named Robert Nicolosi came out he said simply what am i doing Here Good question he was booed before he even started singing those acts set the stage for the entertaining three hour show that featured 41 competing acts along with Apollo comedian Sandman . Lacey who Drew a lot of laughs with his Lively act portraying a reggae Singer Michael Jackson and James Brown. Showcase winners chosen by crowd approval picked up an All expenses paid trip to new York and a National television performance on it s Showtime at the Apollo in March. The three member harmonizing group Shade was the first act to draw some real cheers for their Gutsy performance they had to sing a second time after noisy feedback in the speakers prematurely ended their first shot. Willie Stone All of 8 years old then Sang along with a recording of Boyz ii men s and of the Road and easily won the crowd Over. He earned a spot on the Apollo s Amateur night. But even More impressive were Brothers Brian and Hashim Hudley 5 and 7, who flashed some fancy footwork while singing and dancing to too legit to quit. They earned the showcase s first prize for amateurs Good for hotel and food expenses while in new York for their appearance in the Amateur night at the Apollo. As the night progressed so did the Talent. More and More acts were greeted with cheers rather than getting booed off stage As happened in the Early going. Cathy shorts Dexter Wilder and Travis Brown All put in Good performances. Rhonda Marie Jordan nearly stole the show with her singing act. The final act a group called always consisted of two White Guys and two Black Guys Brian Perkins 20, from Dayton Ohio Adam Komich 20, Jackson Tenn. James Saine 22, Chicago and Elliot Simmons 25, Washington. They looked Sharp in their Blue and Black Matching suits but could they sing Perkins the group s Lead Singer was More concerned with whether he would be accepted As a White person singing in a predominantly Black Competition and by the fact the group was singing Shai s if i Ever fall in love which had already been performed what seemed half a dozen times. I thought a lot of them came to boo people off the stage rather than appreciate the music Perkins said. A lot of them the earlier acts did t get a fair always had no such problems. As soon As Perkins began singing with Komich Saine and Simmons providing a Sweet Harmony the crowd began getting loud again this time to cheer. I was very surprised with the crowd reaction he said. The song was Sung by three groups before we Sang it and i was concerned that the crowd May have been tired of hearing always won the Competition to earn a spot in it s Showtime at the Apollo and even before their National television taping on March 26, things Are happening for the Young group. They have since Cut a demo tape that Morgan says motown and Apollo record producers will soon be listening to. The four soldiers from the 12th engr in in Mannheim Germany Fly to the states on March 18 for their show. The next it s Showtime at the Apollo showcase is scheduled for april 24 in Berlin. Other Sites in Germany still to be scheduled this year could include Frankfurt Kaiserslautern and bad Kreuz Nach. Persons interested in performing should Contact Morgan at 0641-494436. Is Ron Mew Artoy Marco Scheffel left and guitarist Thomas Wolf bending Over Lead new Deal through one of its hot numbers on a hot night in the crowded Jan life podium in Frankfurt Germany. Jazz life a club for serious rockers by Ron Mckinney entertainment writer for live Rock n Roll on the cutting Edge of the Frankfurt Germany club scene the place to go is hone other than the jazz life podium nestled in Sachsen Hausen s famous night life District. The ambience Here is pretty simple american Rock n Roll without the fringes. Seats Are the hottest commodity in this dive and we re not talking Plush leather cushioned numbers. It s either stools at the front tables or wooden benches in the rear. If you want a decent spot arrive by 9 . Make that an hour earlier if you want to sit in front of the stage. By 10 o clock on weekends it s Elbow to Elbow from the stage right up to the bar. The place May be crowded but the Beer is always cold and the live music is always hot seven nights a week. One of the regular bands is new Deal a German group that combines Rock n Roll with a Wacky and entertaining sideshow. The front Man and keyboardist Are True comedians in German but the Singer Marco Scheffel is no Huey Lewis. His the Power of love sounds something like Michael Jackson would if he were screeching Lead vocals for guns n roses. Still he does a Fine Job when he Sticks to the softer vocals of Phil Collins and Toto. One group hot to be missed is John Doe fronted by Tim costello an american airman stationed at Rhein main a and a fellow airman drummer John Carros. John Doe provides a Gritty hard edged Rock n Roll that ranges from Steppe Wolf and Pink Floyd to ugly kid Joe. Costello is a vocalist who treats his a religion while Carros is one of the hottest drummers around their next performances Are March 1 and 2. Another group to be heard is the blues cruisers fronted by american Waymond Harding. This group plays a smooth blend of Rock n Roll with a decidedly brass influence Harding is the Star player whether he s blowing the sax or singing the Lead vocals. Their next performances Are March 18 and 19. One word of warning the cigarette smoke at the jazz life podium gets As thick As this club gets crowded. There Are times when Gas masks should be issued. Of course if it gets too bad you can always step outside for a break and a few breaths of much needed fresh air. A cover of 5 Marks about $3 is sometimes charged on weekends for name bands such As new Deal to reach the club exit a-5 in Frankfurt onto a-643 toward the Masse.
