European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 04, 1993, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday november 4, commentary the stars and stripes Page 15 serbs should be made \ a. To answer for atrocities As a pathetic byproduct of the genocide in Bosnia has been the attempt by some americans of serbian ancestry to deny the reality of the serbian aggression there. What s happening in Bosnia Bob Djurdjewic of Phoenix wrote to the Newyork times the other Day is not a genocide. I. It is a tragedy largely inflicted on the muslims by their own govern ment sure in the sense that the govern ment of Bosnia an internationally recognized country refused to cooperate in its had the temerity to resist ethnic cleans ing of its Muslim citizens. The phrase ethnic cleans ing was actually invented by the serbs for their operations in bos Nia. And everyone knows what it has meant the Mur Der of 150,000 muslims and the expulsion of More than one million from their towns and villages. There is no secret about any of this except to the wilfully Blind the United states the european Community and numerous human rights groups have documented the horrors. Serbian soldiers themselves have de scribed the systematic rape of Muslim women. It is not surprising that americans wit attachments to a country of origin should resist seeing that it has been taken Over by a tyranny. But sooner or later a decent person s sight clears. Happily there Are serbian americans who see and speak out. George Mitro Vich writing in the los Angeles times deplored the abject failure of serbian americans to grasp the brutal savagery of that evil conflict and to protest Serbia s in Anthony Lewis the poet Charles Simic wrote the new Republic the destruction of Vukovan and Sarajevo will not be forgiven the serbs. What Ever moral credit they had As a result of their history they squandered by these two the destruction goes oct. 9 Radovan Karadzic Leader of the bosnian serbs said the siege of Sarajevo is when the serbs poured shells on the City a week later that was explained As a reply to an attack by bosnian government forces. But in fact serbian shelling and sniping have gone on before and since As has the serbian blockade of Sarajevo. Fred Curry a disaster Relief specialist has been in Sarajevo for the International Rescue committee for the last 10monthsv Back in the United states on a Brief leave he told me that the siege is worse now than at any time since the Spring. The serbs Are blocking Oil supplies of Winter clothing plastic for weatherproof ing houses Cuny said All kinds of humanitarian supplies. The critical things now Are water and natural Gas. George Soros the american philanthropist funded an emergency water system taking water from two River Sites. But the serbs arc shelling the Sites now. If the water system is stopped during the Winter people will have to stand in line to get water and carry it Home in buckets in the freezing cold through sniper fire. And the sewage system will breakdown.". creation forces in Bosnia have now added their names to the genocide list by butchering Muslim men women and children in the Village of Stupnik do. The . Officer who arrived on the scene Brig. Angus Ramsey of Britain said this is a disgusting War president Franjo Tadjman of Croatia is overdue to be called to account. But it was serbian leaders who launched the armed aggression Percsi response t0 ethic Clitah Sig 0/993 Dent Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia Karadzic and his military chief Ratko Mladic. If there is any Justice they will be tried for War crimes. As Ramsey said of the massacre at Stupnik do one Day this War will be Over and those who have done this thing will answer for it if we get this thing c the new Forte time senator too easily duped by phony Mia reports sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts in his haste to carry out his Agenda of getting the White House to remove the embargo against Vietnam has done some extraordinary things. One of his recurring feats has been to try to turn fiction into truth. The following is an senator in his capacity As chairman of the sen ate select committee on pow Mia affairs announced about a year ago that on the basis of what he called fresh and impressive evidence he had concluded that four american soldiers who went missing in Vietnam on april 21,1967, had been killed instantly in an ambush on that Day. At least in our judgment Kerry said we believe we can say we know what happened. We believe they died he spoke these definitive words about the four soldiers at a news conference in Hanoi in novem Yber 1992, after being handed the so called evidence by a vietnamese official who said it was his personal diary from the War. The official. Col. Pharn due Dai now the director of Vietnam s military museums said he had witnessed the deaths of the four americans in 1967 in the Central province of Quang Ngai. The diary he said contained a full diary has since been exposed a hearsay or worse. Reliable . Intelligence reports say that the four men were captured alive. Yet Kerry has never re treated from1 his declaration that the four died in an he continues to say As he did at that Hanoi news conference that vietnamese cooperation on the Issue of missing americans has been significant and needs to be rewarded. In a reference to relaxing or lifting the Trade embargo that has been in place since the end of the War in 1975, Kerry said then that he would urge the president to take certain about a month after the news conference Kerry s spokeswoman said that his meeting with Dai had Beena very compelling moment emotionally and that in his mind this resolves the Fate of the four and maybe their families can accept the overwhelming evidence on this Case and on Many Many others gives the families no earthly reason to accept the stones they be been told. They also have no reason to Trust Kerry and All the others in Congress the executive Branch and the Pentagon who have been toiling for nearly two dec Ades to cover up the intelligence data that demonstrate Large numbers of . Prisoners were never returned and never Credi Bly accounted for by Hanoi. Let us look As an exam ple at the Case of the four men whom Kerry wrote off As having died on april 21, 1967. Nine months before Kerry declare them dead on the basis of dais diary the . Investigative team in Hanoi handed the vietnamese the . Intelli gence summary of the Case. U said that after the four disappeared on a Riverbank near Binh son in Quang Ngai province several sources reported that a Binh son District vietnamese communist unit had captured four americans on 21 april at this location on the thu Ong Hoa River. This information can relate Only to specialist and the three other missing shortly after the four men disappeared in 1967, a number of intelligence sources sources deemed re Sydney h. Schanberg liable came in with sightings and details that in the language of one Pentagon report coincide so closely As to fairly Well substantiate that these four men herein fact captured.". Another document this one from the Central Intelli gence Agency cited credible Agency informants who also reported that the four had been captured alive and were being readied for movement. The intelligence documents i quote from in this column were Given to me by a relative of one of the four men. The relative obtained them through a re quest to the Pentagon. These documents though de classified Are not made available to the general Public and Are Given Only to those Mia families who file offi Cial requests. I am not using the names of the four men Here because i do not know How much the other families have been told by the government. To get Back to the evidence Dai s diary has been rendered valueless. After telling reporters at the Kerry news conference last november that he witnessed the incident i saw the ambush and All four soldiers were killed right admitted five months later to . Mia investigators that he had not been at the site and had seen nothing. The whole diary account he said was hearsay provided to him later by villagers in the area. The investigators report said source never personally saw the bodies nor remains associated with this Case. Further most of the Central details in Dai s account do not stand up against the body of evidence. I do not suggest that the four men Are alive today Only that the evidence says they did not die in an am Bush on april 21,1967. C naw Day
