At Best it seems the role of women was merely to pose for them. Yet while overshadowed by these modern masters in both their lifetimes and in the history of Art a handful of women in late 19th-Century Paris refused to be just Domestic or studio accessories. They too wanted to paint and did so successfully. Posterity though has barely recognized them. Now Paris Marmot Tan museum Home to the largest single collection of works by Monet has decided to Rescue three of these painters the american Mary Cassatt and frenchwoman Bertne Morisot and of a Gonzales in a highly acclaimed exhibition called women impressionists which runs until dec. 31. Through 96 oils pastel paintings Aquarelle engravings and drawings produced by the three artists Between 1860 and 1913, the show displays the Range of their talents. Above All it draws attention to Conzales who died at the age of Only 34 and who unlike Cassatt and Morisot was unknown even to Many contemporary experts. Although they knew one another and moved in the same circles the three did not represent a separate movement of women painters. In fact each was clearly influenced by male _ artists who served As teachers and advisers Cassatt by Degas Conzales by Manet Morisot by both Manet and Renoir. Yet they stood out at the time simply by daring to enter a male dominated world when the role assigned to them by society was to become wives and mothers. Furthermore for Marianne Del fond the assistant curator who organized the Marmot Tan exhibition their works reveal a distinct feminine touch. There s an intimacy and tenderness in Many of their paintings she said. Their subjects were usually close to Home. Berthe Morisot painted her daughter a lot Eva Conzales did Many portraits of her sister. Mary Cassatt who never married was extraordinary in the Way she painted mothers and Cassatt who was born into a prosperous Pittsburgh family in 1844, is in raft remembered As the artist who took impressionism to the United states. After moving to Paris at the age of 22 to join the studio of the portrait Painter Charles Chaplin though she spent most of the rest of her life in France and died there in 1926 of the Berthe Morisot s painting Cacote Cache above and Femme co Usuf by Mary Cassatt right. Eve of her 82nd birthday. But she is less Well known today in France than in the United states where most of her works Are to be found. In fact two of the most important pieces by Cassatt in this exhibition Young woman Reading in a Garden 1880 and Mother and child 1906are on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago. These and other works illustrate not Only her daring use of colors and Strong Brush strokes but also the warmth with which she treated the subjects of her portraits. In 1874, she met Degas and they became lifelong friends with the Painter teaching her engraving techniques that she quickly made her own. Gonzales in contrast was just 16 when she joined Chaplin s studio As a Pupil in 1866. But within three years she had attached herself to Manet first As a Model then As a student. She later married Manet s engraver Henri querard and by coincidence died just five Days after her Mentor in 1883. Her life s work was Small perhaps 90 paintings but those at the Marmot Tan have prompted critics to wonder what masterpieces she might have produced had she lived longer. Some Are Clear tributes to Manet Bugle boy 1870for example which is based on be fire by Manet. Many others Are touchingly sad portraits of her sister Jeanne. There is also an air of Solitude in her landscapes of the windswept beaches of Normandy so favored by other impressionists. One in particular float at Low tide 1878stands out with the Black Hull of a boat tilted onto glistening Sand that seems to blend mysteriously with the sky. Gonzales life in Manet s Circle brought her into frequent Contact with Morisot who was eight years her senior and already an accomplished artist by the time they first met in 1869. But surviving letters from Morisot show that she was always jealous of the attention Manet gave to Conzales. Could they both have been " infatuated with Manet i think so yes i think they were said Del fond. In the end though Morisot married Manet s brother Eugene. It was All in the family you know Del fond went on. When Eva Conzales died her _ sister Jeanne then married her widower Henri querard and brought up their in contrast Morisot was on Good terms with Cassatt and they often exchanged letters and dined together. Both also participated in most of the eight impressionist exhibitions held in Paris Between 18 76 and 1884 and Del fond said both played a role in Patching up relations Between artists Renoir Monet Pissarro and Degas before these like Conzales Morisot was enormously influenced by Manet in her Early years but it is apparent that by the mid-1880s Renoir had become her inspiration. When she died in 1895 at the age of 54, she left More than 600 oils and pastel paintings. To the dismay of Jean Marie Tasset the Art critic of be Figaro the current exhibition does not include the fourth female impressionist of the period Marie Bracq Zemond whose principal Mentor was Monet Del fond explained it was my decision that her work simply lacked the Force and importance of that of the other but Tasset had no other reservations. The very successful exhibition at the Marmot Tan is the occasion to discover the secrets and talents hidden behind the always solid Walls of machismo he wrote. It was his Way of saying that Mary Eva and Berthe were impressionists in their own right. Fir 22 stripes Mas Ine not Ember 4, 1993
