European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 07, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse The mamas and the headline nod to the past is photos by John Bohmer above Singer Scott Mckenzie of the mamas and the Papas stands out in 60s musical history for his hit san right new mama Deb Lyons wants to make her own Mark on the group s music. Below right Smokie dusts off some 70s pop hits for the fest Halle crowd. By Steve scholar staff writer t could be been the Monterey pop festival but it was t 1967 and we weren t in California. Or it might be been Woodstock in 1969 but with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin now taking dirt naps and Max Yasgur s farm nowhere in sight it did t feel like it. However the oldies festival in Frankfurt Germany dec. 29 with the mamas and the Papas featuring Scott Mckenzie the trem Eloes Suzi Quattro Smokie the lords and other oldies bands turned the decibels Back 25-plus years and Rock and rolled the massive fest Halle to its Concrete foundations. In the 1960s, it s said the Only time the Flower children listened to mamas or Papas was when they turned on the radio. The truth of that Maxim was evident when the mamas and the Papas climaxed a great oldies show last week before an audience whose Ages stretched from teenagers to grandmothers. Although in All fairness the group that night hardly resembled the original group. It might better have been billed As the Papas and the daughters. Original group member Denny Doherty 52, and Scott Mckenzie 55, who joined them Masand the Papas later were the Only ones with Long standing ties to the singing group that made millions from airy California Folk pop songs. But when it came to singing words of love a song that helped rocket mama Cass Elliot to Fame new mama Deb Lyons pulled it off without a hitch. Her voice resembled Elliot s and she hit the notes with a Crystal Clear precision that would be made Elliot proud. The other new mama Lisa Eiesland brought the House Down with Cree que Alley a song that hit no. 2 on the charts in 1967. Doherty said after the concert that the songs sound As Good today As they did in the mid 60s, and that s Why crowds still flock to see the group and hear the music. Good songs Are Good songs. The years Don t take away from that no matter who sings them Doherty said. Three generations of people come and see us. It s not hard to get pumped when you re on stage in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The German audiences Are different than american ones. They stomp their feet and slam their seats. They really get into it he said. One of the greatest moments in Doherty s almost 30-year recording career came before the group formed he said. I was walking Down Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village in the Early 60s and heard a Beautiful voice coming from a belonged to Cass Elliot. I la remember that Day As Long As i live Doherty said. Another vivid memory for Doherty was someone who resembled modern Day Bagman throwing Down a crumpled piece of paper on a table in Greenwich Village Doherty was sitting at in the Early 60s. The Man was Bob Dylan and the piece of paper contained the original words to his Early hit the times they Are a Changin. Mckenzie cruised to Fame in 1967 on his smash hit san Francisco be sure to Wear Flowers in your hair written by papa John Phillips. That song perhaps More than any other was the signature song of the Flower Power Era Mckenzie said. Although Scott Sang san Francisco Only once at last week s show he said audiences often Hoot and cheer until he sings it three or four times. Sporting shoulder length hair with a Matching Gray flecked Beard Mckenzie and a More restrained Doherty ran through every hit the group Ever had. From monday monday to / saw her again to California dreaming the group Sang them with an abandon and Fervour that mirrored the hectic and chaotic late 60s. For Doherty and Mckenzie their onstage enthusiasm made the music timeless. Elvis lookalike Shakin Stevens ook the Suzi Quattro the Raspy voiced Queen of Rock n Roll jams at Center with two unidentified musicians. Members of the lords bring a touch of Metal to the Good time Rock n Roll goings on. And his hard driving fast throttled Decibel busting Rock n Roll pummelled the audience with a run through of his hits. Dressed in Black with his Jet Black hair slicked Back Stevens brought the crowd to their feet As he gyrated and thrust his body toward every female in the audience. More than once he kicked the microphone As he. Spun and whirled across the stage. Billed As the Queen of Rock n Roll Suzi Quattro Clad in a skin tight leather outfit hit the stage running hard and did t quit until her set was Over about 15 minutes later. Like Stevens Quattro brought the crowd to its feet on several occasions with her pulsating rhythmic music that left her and the crowd sweating and breathless. Other Rock n Roll bands performing included the lords pussycat of the Road. By almost any measurable Standard the night s entertainment was fun. Girls danced in poodle skirts lighters and sparklers flickered across the audience and arms swayed to and fro with the music it not have been Monterey or Woodstock. But it was Rock n Roll. Remember when Here Are some milestones in the mamas and Papas history. The group formed in 1965 in new York City. Original group members were John Phillips Michelle Gilliam later Phillip Dennis Doherty and Cass Elliot. The group made seven albums. Where this swedish foursome parts company with its predecessor is in its Devotion to the beat As every Melody is grounded in some form of dance music be it the Lithe reggae inflected pulse of a that she wants or the techno tinged Groove of Young and proud. And even though the songs tend to be a touch on the Frothy Side the blend of Melody and rhythm in songs like All that she wants or Happy nation is All but irresistible. . Considine Baltimore Sun write right Linda Ronstadt Elektra Inda Ronstadt still has a great ear for pop material spend some time with Winter Light and you la Marvel that anyone could have. Missed a Melody As wonderful As the one in Brian Wilson s overlooked Gem Don t talk or that a song As seductive As Anna Mcgarrigle a heartbeats accelerating has t already topped the charts. Yet her exquisite taste does t quite keep her from trampling a few of these tunes in an ill advised burst of full throated bravado. So think of this As being like the Little girl with the curl when it s Good it s very very Good. And when it s bad you la fast Forward. . Considine Baltimore Sun so far so Good Bryan Adams am hat does it say about Bryan Adams that his Best songs have All been raucous guitar driven rockers while his biggest hits have All been Sappy sentimental ballads that he May seem a Tough Guy on the outside but deep Down he s just an old Softie maybe but. The answer suggested by his greatest hits collection is a Little simpler he s just not rough enough to be a convincing Rock and roller. No matter How much Keith Richards style guitar he pumps into the summer of 69 and it s Only love his voice lacks the sly Adams Jagger esque snarl that would make the music seem dangerous. But give him an achingly slow song like heaven or everything i do i do it for you and Adams rough edges come across like careworn sincerity. . Considine Baltimore Sun hand on the Torch us 3 Blue note appers have been trying to build a Bridge Between hip hop and be Bop for years but usually All that Means is dropping a few jazz samples into an otherwise Standard rhythm Loop. That s beginning to change though and if acts like us 3 Are any indication True jazz rap fusion May finally be at hand. After All not Only do most of the tracks build their beats around classic hard Bop grooves things like Horace Silver s filthy Mckasty and Herbie Hancock s Cantaloupe Island but the group makes sure to leave room for actual instrumental improvisation. Best of All raps like / got it Coin on and knowledge of be have As much Merit lyrically As musically. Run do not walk to Check this out. .
