Favre had picked up 27 Yards on three passes and Edgar Bennett ran for 4 Yards to give the packers second and four at the Detroit 40. Packer coach Mike Holmgren called for a Standard pass to a wide receiver. With possibly one minute left in their season Favre thought it stupid. So he rolled left. He looked for his tight end then he looked to run at the precise moment Favre realized he had no idea what he was doing but he saw receiver Sterling Sharpe standing alone in the right Corner of the end zone. I figured what the Heck i d give it the big heave to he said. And so the packers were wildly tossed into the second round of the pfc play offs with Favre connecting with Sharpe on a touchdown pass that gave them a 28 24 Victory Over the Detroit Lions. The wonders of football s most Enig Matic quarterback never cease. One moment Favre was throwing the Ball into the hands of cornerback Melvin Jenkins then watching him run 15 Yards to give the Lions a 10-Point Lead. The next moment he was screaming at lion defensive players. "1 hate watching films because some times i wonder what the hell am i doing " Favre said. But in the final moment he was Send ing his team to Dallas for a second round game next sunday while sending the stunned Lions Tol heir Winter Homes. It was the packers first playoff Victory in a non strike year since their 1967 super bowl win Over the los Angeles raiders. The Lions beat the packers in every statistical Way. They out gained them 410-293. They were so dominating they appeared to Lions Barry Sanders attempts in vain to sail Over the Packer defensive line for a touchdown in saturday s pfc wildcard game. Overcome two end zone interceptions thrown by Erik Kramer including a Sec Ond half pass that was returned 101 Yards for a touchdown by George Teague a postseason record. A Joe Montana was sup posed to bring to Kansas City the kind of playoff magi that won four super bowls at san Francisco. Kansas City got magic from Montana and from its Spe Cial teams saturday in beating Pittsburgh 27-24 in overtime to Advance to the next round of the nil playoffs. Montana s magic was a 7 touchdown pass to Tim Barnett on fourth Down tying it with 1 43 left in Regula Tion. But he could t have done it had not Keith Cash blocked a punt and Fred Jones returned it 31 Yards to the Pittsburgh 9 just before the 2-minute warning. Then Montana moved the chiefs into position on their second overtime Possession and Nick Lowery came through with a 32 Field goal after 11 03 winning of of atoning for his miss at the end of regulation. Part of the fun of the game is having to Deal with pressure said Montana who was 28 of 43 for 276 Yards after missing his first seven throws. He dealt with pres sure As he always has by remaining poised when he could t find his first two receivers and then picking up Barnett in the Back of the end zone. The chiefs who won the acc West at 11-5, now go to Houston to face the oilers who beat them 30-7 at the Astrodome in the regular season. Montana missed that game with a bruised Elbow and Dave Krieg played in his place. This week it looked for a while like Krieg could do a better Job than Montana who started out wearing gloves in the 10-degree chill and was shaken up when hit after his first completion and had to come out. The Swap resulted in the Only Kansas City score of the first half a23 pass from Krieg to Birden. For most of the game it looked like the Steeles would improve their Arrowhead stadium record to 7-0.we came Here truly believing we could win said coach Bill Cowher who was . Coach Marty Schotten Heimer s defensive coordinator before taking Over the Steeles last year. We did t Knock the door Over but we were going to keep pounding on it until we got this was a game with a variety of twists. After tying the game the chiefs had another Chance but Lowery missed a 43 attempt. In a Way that was Fortu Nate because a 9.completion to Todd Mcnair that moved the Ball into position clearly hit the ground. Pittsburgh scored on its first and last possessions of the first half on passes from Neil o Donnell of 10 Yards to Adrian Cooper and 26 Yards to Ernie Mills. Gary Ander son added a 30 Field goal for a 17-7 Lead. The chiefs began to take Over in the third Quarter Dur ing a period in which Montana was 17-for-21. The Steeles came right Back going 74 Yards in nine plays capped by a 2?-Yard pass to Eric Green from o Donnell who was 23 of 42 for 286 Yards. Pittsburgh stopped the chiefs the next time and the Kansas City defense reciprocated. Now there was 2 38 left in regulation Kansas City had one time out left and Mark royals lined up to punt from his 48. Up the Middle came Cash to Block the Ball Jones plucked it out of the air and raced 31 Yards to the 9 be fore being caught by Gary Jones. It was the idea of special teams coach Kurt Schotten Heimer Marty s brother. But even that would t have been enough had it not been for Montana. Allen ran for a Yard Montana s pass to Keith Cash in the end zone was knocked away by Wil lie Williams and Allen ran for another Yard. The chiefs called timeout. Then it was Montana time. "j.j. Was supposed to be my Man on the right but they did a Good Job covering him Montana said. Then i looked for Willie Davis and i finally moved around and saw Tim in the Back of the end zone and hit to 0"246850"00050411
