Respect for our hosts a recent writer evidently upset by a previous letter concerning some Ameri cans acting better than everyone else cannot separate present Day Germany from its past. The writer Felt that the americans in question Are merely proud and that other countries had better feel grateful for our presence the world needed to be reminded of the horrors of the nazis and the third Reich and that his reception Here in Germany has been far from a warm one. I like the writer am a proud Ameri can. I have enormous respect for our Mil itary and its accomplishments past an present and i feel Good about the help we be Given other countries. However unlike the writer i and my family have been made to feel very Welcome by our Host nation. My daughters Ages 4 and 5, have Al ready noticed How clean Germany is and i feel ashamed when they ask me Why americans dirty up someone else i feel angry when i hear comments like the writer s about How Germany should basically worship at our feet for saving their we have known older germans who do remember the atrocities of world War ii and who Are indeed grateful for America s help and supporting the years that followed. The younger germans who have no memory of this history sometimes see Only the arrogant attitude held by those few americans who tarnish the image of us All. I suspect the writer is one who rarely leaves the Barracks housing area shops exclusively at the Post Exchange and knows few or no germans on a personal level. I Hope he gets to experience More of Germany than the local Brand of Beer. Living in another country is an Opportunity not Only to learn tolerance of cultures different from Pur own but to embrace these differences. We would expect any foreign guests living on american soil to show respect for our beliefs and to make an Effort to abide by our customs while in our coun try. Should we not expect the same of ourselves while visitors in someone else s country Tiffany Darmstadt Germany. Recycle it s the Law Here in Kitzinger it is against German Law not to Recycle. There s a program Here called sort to bring the military Community on line with this jaw. Our building coordinator called a meeting of All the sponsors in the building to Tell us we could possibly lose our quarters if we did t Recycle. We have dumpsters at the end of our building for paper Glass an Metal. We also have three turn posters in Between us and another building for non recyclable trash. Two Days after Christmas i looked out my front window and saw trash piled in and around the dumpsters that Are Forno recyclables. Ninety percent of this trash was Christmas wrapping paper and cardboard boxes that presents came of taking this trash to the Recy cling bins they just left it at the closest dumpster. However nothing that i can see is being done to make these people Recycle. Could it be possible that the japanese Are right when they said americans Are Lazy it s either that or we just Don t care. Staff sgt. William e. Kelm Kitzinger Germany animal rights wrongs several weeks ago i read the tragic Story of a 3-year-old child being killed by a Wolf dog. Perhaps the dog attacked the child because if Felt its litter of pups was being threatened. The fact that the animal and its pups were destroyed is not part of the tragedy. Destroying those animals does not raise serious moral questions of crimean punishment. Destroying those Ani Mals was not a matter of Justice or fair treatment. A dog killed a child and it the dog and its pups were destroyed. It scares me that i live in a society that is so morally confused that someone feels that the dog s Point of View should be considered. I m not a Hunter and it makes me angry to see someone beat their dog. But there is something very Creepy about these animal rights people there is also something Creepy about considering it arrogant to value a human life Over an animal s life. I be talked to some of these animal rights advocates. They believe that Large areas now populated by humans should be depopulated to make room for All the cute innocent animals who by Law of nature have the rights to these lands. Every time i read about some fool Rushing into Busy traffic or a burning House to save their dog or cat and As a re sult getting themselves killed i wonder my god what in the world were they thinking i be come to realize that a Lotof people consider these impulsive Sensi Tive and thoroughly dead animal lovers to be heroes. Attorneys who were appointed by republicans and dumped by president Clinton. The motivation of Many is simple they believe Clinton and the democrats in Congress Are dismantling the Reagan revolution and must be stopped. We re about to adopt policies that Are very difficult to undo for instance socialized Medicine said former Reagan budget director James c. Miller Iii who s competing with North for the go Senate nomination in Virginia. Out West there s ammunition in Clin ton s attempts to reduce subsidies and make other changes in land use policies. The reforms would affect grazing water mining and Timber. Add All those up and they be basically written us off out Here said by Jamieson director of the Bureau of land management from1989-93.
