Renumbering the 4th air support operations group which provides sup port to the army As the 617th  new designation is consistent with other 17th air Force units. The group is designed to give Safe . Army Europe and 17th air Force commanders a single focal Point for operational support according to the command. The group Headquarters remains in Heidelberg and squadrons and detachments located with army units in Germany and Italy will continue to re port to the group.
