In a study published Friday in the journal science scientists at the Weizmann Institute in Reh Vot Israel report that test subjects allowed to get a solid nights sleep had an improved memory of a task taught to them the Day before. However when the subjects were deprived of a Type of deep slumber called Rem sleep their learning did not improve. Rem or rapid Eye movement is a stage of sleep associated with dreaming. In the study six test subjects were taught a simple repetitive task during1 an eight hour training session. They were allowed to sleep and then were retested. The researchers found that after sleep the subjects performed better than they had at the end of the training session. This suggested that some process occurred during Steep that strengthened the learning. Next the researchers conducted the training session at the end of the Day and then allowed the subjects to sleep wearing monitoring devices that detected two Levels of slumber Rem sleep and slow wave or so sleep. For some of the subjects Rem sleep was interrupted with a Bell throughout the night. For others so sleep was interrupted. As a result Kami and his co authors believe that during Rem sleep a process occurs in the brain that preserves and stimulates learning. Without the Rem sleep the subjects ability to retain knowledge of a simple repetitive skill was compromised. In another study researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson showed that cells in the brains of rats that were stimulated during a learning process also were stimulated during sleep. The researchers said the finding is consistent with the belief that knowledge gained while awake is somehow reinforced or consolidated during sleep.
