A Knob or nothing i have followed the controversy of the Shannon. Faulkner affair in the stars and stripes and have come to the following conclusions she wants to be a part of the corps of cadets and gain All the benefits associated with graduating from a prestigious military College such As the alumni network and a commission in the armed forces. However she does no to want to shave her head or be subject to the harassment that first year cadets a a knobs if you will routinely receive due ing their entire freshman year. In Short she wants to have her cake and eat it too. Justice department attorney Sandra Lynn Beber states that a neither the Knob haircut nor anything remotely similar have any counterparts in americans female military perhaps is. Beber does not understand the purpose behind the haircuts or the brutal harassment that a a knobs Rece Ive during their freshman year. If is. Faulkner truly wishes to gain the benefits of a Citadel education she must submit herself totally to the citadels freshman system. The a a system is not easy or politically Correct. She would gain a Good real of respect and acceptance from her classmates upperclassmen and the military Community were she to meet the standards the Citadel has set for freshmen to include haircuts and physical training which male cadets adhere to. Is. Faulkner has applied for admission and was accepted. One knew perfectly what the standards were and what was expected of freshmen when she applied. If she wants a Citadel education she must perform just like every other Cadet. I believe much of the paranoia stems from the fact that if is. Faulkner is allowed to join the corps of cadets there will be a degeneration of standards which if the Justice department has its Way will occur. If she wants an easy College life and a military education i understand Mary Baldwin College has a very Good program already established. A first it. Stephen e. Also la leche a breast feeder support group has found that protein Ana Vitamin Rich foods Are essential to nourishing newborns. For these reasons perhaps the services would like to encourage multifamily sports such Quot As kickball for off duty recreation. A child who has a Chicken salad Sandwich for lunch and practices shooting baskets at an on base Post basketball net will probably be healthier than one who spends the Day looking at a to set eat ing Candy bars and feeling bored. More healthful sports and balanced foods be costly to implement. Churches and Volunteer groups could organize nutrition improvement classes As Well As arrange times for families to exercise or play four Square and volleyball. Most bases already have Good gymnast urns and Many commissaries already Label healthful foods with healthy heart labels. Youth centers have Good programs for school age children. I commentary gridlock threatens democratic system by Tom Teepen the Washington gridlock Bill Clinton campaigned against May have Cost him his anti crime Bill and threatens to take out health care Reform too. If it manages both the Clinton presidency will be effectively Over. That of course has been the idea of the opposition All along and never mind the merits of any legislation run Over in the process. The gridlock that is being used against Clinton is compounded in about equal parts of special interest lobbies and scorched Earth partisanship. In the Case of the crime Bill the special interest of course was the gun lobby led by the National Rifle association. Fearful of the rising revulsion with firearms the Era pulled off a coup enrolling the gop As its ally against gun control. Thirty eight republicans who had voted earlier to ban assault weapons turned Tail under threat of losing party funding for their re elections. Nearly two score democrats were cowed by the gunners too but As serious As that defection was it was not the major cause of the crime Bill a failure. Three out of four democrats voted with the president. Only 11 republicans Lent themselves to it. This Tough on Crooks Bill was just the kind that members of both parties usually Rush to support. Republicans hid behind opposition to the Bill a few crime prevention efforts mainly youth activities that have proved helpful in test cities. Done to buy it. Most voted for far pricier. Social programs in the past and you May be sure most will again. The difference this time was Given away when rep. Dick Armey a Texas declaimed a let me Tell you my friends on the Democrat Side of the aisle your presidents political fortunes not that important to the customary form is a the president a recognition that any president is More than just a Republican or democratic big dog. Armeyy a dismissive pronoun neatly caught up today a Washington. Small wonder with House republicans led by Newt Gingrich and Senate republicans by Bob Dole two take no prisoners partisans. A now gridlock is gripping health care Reform. The big Money interests that profit from the status quo have used fright ads to scare the Public out of its support for serious Reform. What with contributions to election campaigns Freebie trips for sympathetic members to Paris Jamaica and elsewhere More than $100 million has been spent unt racking Reform. Republicans who last year supported Universal coverage and other substantial changes will now hear of no More than the Mere tinkering that is All that the medical and insurance lobbies will allow. If gridlock were threatening Only clan ton that would be one thing. Presidents come and go. But it is now threatening the capacity of the political system to act in the Public interest at All and that ought to worry everyone. Even republicans a. A.
