No Joy in Mudville the ghost of mighty Casey arose in Mudville today he slipped from beneath Home plate to Greet a summer Day to Nave a Sweet reunion upon the Field of play. Mighty Casey whose prodigious pounding of the horse hide sphere brought a boy s twinkle to the eyes of aging men and Joy to every ear. Mighty Casey whose herculean misses brought sighs and Baleful Boos to lips within the stands returned not to recapture his glory or lost Days of youth but to relive his love of the game. To feel the magic once again. He returned to smell soiled horse hide and Oil on leather gloves he returned to see men As boys playing the game he loved to see fans worn from the worries of life restored to youth and vigor As they saw the game unfold this this is the reason mighty Casey. K. Returned i m told. But there is no Joy in Mudville no laughter in the stands and the ghost of mighty Casey slumps sobbing with face in hands. It seems the boys of summer have forgotten the reason for the game. The sheer wonder of the sport is replaced by lawyers wrangling and lengthy Days in court. Greed is now the motive and the Field of dreams has died. There is no Joy in Mudville. No laughter and no shouts. Mighty Casey sits sadly for baseball has struck out. Chaplain maj David r. Penland Kirch Gons Germany mixed up priorities the baseball strike seems to be All that is heard Over the radio seen on to and read in the newspapers. I find it As interesting As Michael Jordan s so called baseball career. I feel we need to get straight to the fact of the matter these athletes Are getting paid an enormous amount of Money to play a game. That s All. Just a game. It really bothers me when we As a nation allow athletics and athletes to Rule our world. They be become our role models and supposed Ideal i feel that athletes Are just that athletes people who play a sport above a Standard ability. However rewarding this ability with a paycheck Worth millions of dollars is ridiculous. Especially when teachers the occupation i find most important Are getting paid barely above minimum wage. There s something wrong with this. Hopefully this strike and the anger resulting from this ridiculous outcry for More Money will make us As a nation re evaluate our standards and give the True financial Reward to those occupations that deserve it riot those who just play a game. Commentary voter apathy won t be Simpson s fault by the Washington Post cal1fornians May be about to engage in yet another Experiment in the growing disconnection Between Electo ral politics and Ordinary life. The proximate Issue is the Impact of the . Simpson murder trial on this year s elections there which include contests for the governorship and a us. Senate scat. No it s not that the races will be decided by which Side candidates take on or. Simpson s guilt or innocence. The real Issue is whether politics will get much coverage on television at All or whether the Simpson doings will overwhelm All other news. Nationally and even More in the los Angeles area Simpson s travails have been a television ratings smash. Stations can t get enough of this Story. What californians who closely follow politics arc now pondering is whether the Simpson trial this fall will drive out All other news especially news about political campaigns. The hot political question what if they gave an election and television Didtk t come the fear is that if that happens about the Only information voters will get other than what they might read in the newspapers will come from the paid political advertising and the direct mail the campaigns Send out them selves. Contrary to popular belief there can be a lot of accurate information in political advertising. But much of that information especially in the increasingly vicious sen ate race Between Between incumbent Democrat Dianne Feinstein and re publican rep. Michael Huffington is of the slash up your opponent variety. With Huffington enjoying the use of Al most unlimited funds from his own pocket there will be a lot of such Adver Tising and sen. Feinstein has begun responding in kind. By the time november comes voters May be inclined simply to kick the Vot ing Booths if they bother to go to the polls at All. The state s governor s race Between incumbent Pete Wilson and state trea surer Kathleen Brown May get a bit More attention but it too could be largely buried under trial news. We Are disinclined to join those who say there is something terrible about All the attention Given matters such As the Simpson Case or the Menen Dez Brothers trial or the Tonya Harding Story it is neither mysterious nor surprising that such stories engage the interest of so Many people and therefore get so much attention in the press and on the air. Nor Given the Public s fed up state with politics is it entirely surprising that politics gets dumped first when Many producers and editors make their choices about space and time for the news. But it is Worth pondering whether a Cycle of indifference gets created when the Public s unhappiness with politics is read instead As a Complete Lack of interest. Candidates themselves also need to consider that the widespread and quite reasonable Assumption is that a Campaign based Only on their own advertising will be especially Down and. Dirty. Politicians complain All the time about the terrible things others say about them. But Little that is said or them is worse than what they say about each other at Campaign time. Might that also have something to do with Why so Many prefer to watch a murder trial i fol.k5 Rem Meir tub natiqnmpzref5rnpum wbk ago we asked reapers to Icax.
