European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 17, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse R Page 10 the stars and stripes religion saturday september 17,1994 priest has common Bond with couples he counsels Atlanta a the Rev. David Dye has an advantage Over other Catholic priests who counsel engaged couples he can fall Back on his own experience As a husband for the past 22 years. As a married priest i can give couples a different perspective than a celibate priest. Not necessarily a better perspective but different Dye said. Dye 50, was an episcopal priest until 1988, when he converted to catholicism. He was ordained in the Catholic Church in 1992 under an exemption allowing priests from anglican churches to be ordained As Cath Olics and remain married. He and his wife Chantal have three children Ages 13 through20, there Are about 80 married Catholic priests in the United states All of them former episcopal priests. Besides serving As chaplain at Georgia state univer sity in Atlanta Dye says mass once a week at a Church in Lilburn and counsels couples during a Daylong sem Inar on marriage required by the Church for engaged couples. The Atlanta did t select Dye for the Job because he s married but it did t Hurt. Various priests have been involved in that position and obviously none of them have been married said the Rev. Peter Dora spokesman for the archdiocese. But we Are very Happy that he can bring his perspective to the i Felt it brought a whole new dimension to marriage preparation said Lynn Crutchfield who has worked with Dye in the remarriage program. I thought he shared beautifully his relationship with his wife and. Children. Then again it can be confusing to some. It s new for us and it s very surprising to some Dye said his marriage is sometimes a disadvantage in counselling. What if i have an argument with my wife and then i leave the House to counsel a couple he said. Tell me what Side i m going to be on if they re having a Dis agreement. I May be biased and Side with the Man while a celibate priest would be More James Davidson a sociologist at Indiana s Purdue University who studies catholicism said Riany couples May be More Apt to accept counselling from a married Rev. David Dye is a married Catholic priest who counsels engaged couples for the Atlanta archdiocese. My sense is that there Are a number of people who May have marital difficulties and be reluctant to go to a celibate priest because they would expect that he does not understand their problems Davidson said. If it works out i think you might see the Church putting a lot More married priests in those positions but Richard Lamanna a sociology professor at the University of notre Dame also in Indiana said mos couples Don t mind being counselled by a celibate priest you Don t have to be sick to treat an illness and you Don t have to be married to be a marriage counsel or Lamanna said. To Cap or not churchgoers debating emotion is decorum by Judy Tarjanyi Toledo Blade in a Church fortunate enough to have both a magnificent Organ and gifted hands to play it an awkward silence sometimes hangs in the rafters after the performance of a particularly soul stirring piece. Emotion argues with decorum As congregation Mem Bers ask themselves should we applaud in churches where tradition tames the urge to applaud the answer usually has been absolutely but in a growing number of congregations even those with formal liturgies hand clapping is being tolerated and even encouraged. It seems it is at the More formal european born protestant churches where it re Mains suspect. Eric Dickey director of music and organist at Zoar lutheran Church in Perrysburg Ohio said occasional rounds of applause have been breaking out at the Church for the last five to 10 years although Many people still Are Uncertain whether they should clap and if so when. After pondering the subject and listening to discussions of it at summer music and theology conferences Dickey has concluded that applause in Church is most appropriate when it is a spontaneous gesture inspired by a move of the spirit. But if you have to Stop and it or wait to see if someone else is going to Start then maybe it s just As Well to wait until after the service and show your appreciation much of course depends on the Church s tradition said Dickey an Episcopalian who has worked in lutheran churches for the last decade. L or example he said some lutheran music directors consider applause inappropriate because the purpose of Church music is to glorify god not the musicians. But Dickey said spontaneous applause in response to a particularly moving Solo or choral work can be a Way for the congregation to affirm what they have just heard. It s like yes that s what we wanted to say the congregation feels the need to participate even if it s a choir or an Organ Anthem. It s not that they re applaud ing the person but they want to share in that offering it s the same As saying amen during the Sermon income at Cornerstone Christian Center a pentecostal Church amens Are considered appropriate during the Sermon and applause and hand clapping Are practically expected during the service. The Way we look at it says Derick Thomas min ister of music clapping is a form of Praise so it s not Praise necessarily for the people that Are doing some thing. We re clapping in Honor of no thanks says James Metzler organist and choir master at Trinity episcopal Church in downtown Tole do Ohio. " applause to me is a secular Type thing not a sacred thing. I Haven t Ever really tried to think through what bothers me. In part it s because i m a traditionalist and that s the Way i grew up. Applause was not allowed.". To Metzler the insertion of a round of applause into a sacred worship service takes away from whatever spirituality has been building in the service.
