European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 08, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 10 the stars and stripes computers tuesday november 8,1994 screens wasting Money millions spent on unneeded software by Jack Warner Cox news service while i have made every Effort to keep religion out of these computer discussions the time has come to determine whether your screen is indeed of saving. A very considerable part of the software Industry is convinced of it,.and is cranking out screen savers Day and night. These Little programs take Over your Monitor when there has been no input for a specified amount of time and put Active and often extremely Complex images of the screen. The theory is that if you leave your Monitor on for Long periods of Tim with the same image on it the windows desktop for instance this image will eventually be burned indelibly into the screen. This is a fact. However there is often considerable difference Between a fact and the truth. The truth is that your Monitor is unlikely to last Long enough for this to happen. Given this and the fact that windows comes with a decent selection of screen savers the Market for these things i amazing. Scarcely a week goes by that some publisher does t Send me a disk of them. Flying toasters Aren t it anymore now you can get scenes fro Star wars Star trek and Jurassic Park and heaven knows what else. I can Only assume that screen savers have become some kind of High tech Macho thing my screen Saver i prettier or weirder or dumber or whatever than yours. After All How much time do you think you would spend looking at your screen Saver the thing activates after you be left the keyboard alone for a Given number of minutes presumably you have left the area. When you come Back you re going to tap the keyboard or the mouse and get Back to work or to play or whatever. If this sort of thing makes you feel Good then who am i to object on the other hand you can get a pretty Nice game for what you will pay for a lot of screen savers another concern is windows wallpaper which is almost As big an Industry As screen savers. Windows wallpaper of course is the background behind the windows desktop. Windows comes with a considerable selection of wallpaper too. Fancy wallpaper is a drag on you system. Not much perhaps but it takes More memory and More processor Power to keep a Degas painting in place than it does a solid Blue background. So you figure How you want to use All that Power in your machine. Frankly aside from the wallpaper s toll on Power i be always found myself irritated when i throw a Lovely image on the screen Only to have it largely obscured by the desktop. What s the Point in All that foliage when you can t even see the Gorilla in the Middle of it i d suggest you open up the windows control panel select desktop and fool around with the screen savers an wallpaper therein before you go out and spend Money for fancier ones. Computer users May enjoy screen savers from programs such As Star trek but their monitors Are unlikely to get burned without hem.
