Pundits have trumpeted a variety of opinions before the Media As fact which is instantly swallowed whole and subsequently de posited on these very pages. As of this Date the Only facts Are those that have been released to the Public As a result of the official investigation con ducted last summer. It seems that every Day we read yet another air Force offi cer s testimony that . Army helicopter operations in Northern Iraq were at fault and that army aviators refused to comply with air Force rules and procedures. I would ask that readers consider the source of your information and realize that they Are hearing but one Side of this tragic Issue. In contrast the army wit Nesses have been counselled not to re lease or discuss any information pertain ing to the shoo Down and unlike our Brothers in Blue we have honoured that request. V. _. ,. Responsibility without accountability cannot be tolerated in the service of our country. In that respect the guilty must be held accountable for their actions and pay their debt to society. This will ensure that those who Are placed in positions of responsibility will act accordingly and allow the families of the victims to close this horrible tragedy and go on with their lives. ,. _ Kenneth , Germany tonal nor do i even attempt to under stand the guilt and the grief that May is going to have to Deal with each and everyday of his life. However May is not the Only one who is going to Deal with grief every Day. There Are mothers fathers spouses children Sisters Brothers and friends who will mourn every Day for Theresa of their lives also. In today s society even in the Mili Maryone is held accountable for one s actions whether they were intentional Ornot. When May fired his missile at the helicopter he did not mean to take the lives of innocent people. The Drunken Driver does not intentionally set out to harm his victim yet he is held account Able for his mistake. Is there any differ ence Between the two some argue that the Pilot was in a stressful situation and therefore May be excused from his mistake. The military today realizes its pilots Are probably going to be placed in stressful situations at some Point in their career. This is Why the qualifications to enter flight school in the military Are so very Strin gent. A \. I feel sympathy for May but i Feelmore sympathy for the children who will grow up never knowing their in december when 1 will kiss my husband goodbye to return once again to Turkey and continue flying the Black Hawk missions into Northern Iraq i can Only Hope and Pray another Pilot won make the same mistake. Cindy Herron Vii Irmburg Germany charges justified in response to the various article about the Friendly fire Downing of two . Army Black Hawk helicopters on april 14, i feel As though the charges against it. Col. Randy w. May and the airborne warning and control system Crew members Are justified. I do not think the Downing was Intel just turn it off i be been hearing a lot about How som of the shows we see on american forces network Are ruining our children. I Veseen a Little newsletter that highlights some of the offensive subject matter on the Roseanne show. The author of this newsletter printed All of these things out of Content so if the Reader relies Only on the information in this newsletter it would seem that the author has a valid Point. However if you watch the show units entirety and Are an objective viewer you will probably come away with a Dif Ferent conclusion. Yes i agree that the Roseanne show and a couple of others Are not for Young children and it would probably be Betterto show them a Little later at night. But when i hear talk of taking a show off the air t get a Little upset because then you Are taking away the rights of those who want to watch these shows. If you Don to like it Don t watch it. Sim ple. But if you Stop showing a program then you take away my right to decide whether or not i want to watch it. I realize we have Only one television station but always plug in a video. I Don t care to watch sports All weekend but i do not advocate removing All sports programming from the air. Let s All Start taking some of the responsibility for How our children turn out and Stop blaming television toy guns Etc. Commentary by winning let us suppose that the republicans sweep the elections gaining Majori ties in both the House and Senate for the first time in 40 years. This will be widely interpreted As popular revolt against things As they Are a rejection of perceived buffoonery and knavery within the Beltway a Call for the end of politics and politicians As usual rejection of familiar political figures and arrangements and a resounding blow for term limits. And what will we get two Large egged leaders with 49 years in Congress Between them. The familiar sound bites of Bob Dole will drone on from the majority Side of the Senate. The tiresome countenance of Newt Gingrich will stare Down from the throne of the speaker of the House of representatives. The party s new blood in Congre swill include the warmed Over face of Oliver North no longer a witness deceiving the Congress but sitting with Alfonse d Amato perhaps As resident ethics experts and keepers of the Senate s con science mercilessly haranguing ethically challenged witnesses from the Clinton administration. And Michael Huffington of California ambitious wife and inherited Fortune in Tow will bring to his newly purchased Senate seat All the magic that so recently made him one of the most underachieving freshmen in the history of the House of there of course will be Phil Gramm lord ing it Over the minority with All the deftness and subtlety you learn at a mail order Charm school. Vrho knows these Guys might just provide president Clinton with exactly Robert Reno what he so desperately heeds a conspicuous target he can run against beside himself. The real question is not whether give arithmetic and fiscal realities the republicans can come close to providing the revolution voters seem to expect. It is rather How shopworn familiar self serv ing and incompetent will this leadership look by 1996 after two years of in achieved promises congressional politic Sas usual Pac influenced votes unrealized in House reforms and partisan Bick ering with the White House. Republicans for the better part of 40 years have thrived As a party that tends to dominate the presidency and obstruct the Congress from a minority position More powerful than its numbers suggest and less accountable than the majority position demands.
