The International group of scientists that carried out the research was led by Peter Armbruster a German physicist who is credited with leading team that produced three other heavy new elements at the Center Between 1981 and 1984. The Center said a dozen scientists from research centers in Russia Slovakia and Finland collaborated in discovering the new element which does not yet have a name. The heaviest element occurring in nature i uranium with atomic number 92. Element 110 existed for Only a fraction of a thousandth of a second. But its presence was prove when the apparatus detected an Alpha particle or helium nucleus that was emitted As the element decayed the Center said. Several laboratories worldwide sought intensively but without Success for this element during the past 10 years the Center said. It credited Basic improvements in apparatus and acceleration technology for the breakthrough. The bonding of the Nickel and Lead atoms was possible Only at a certain bombardment Speed. The element has an atomic weight of 269 and is related chemically to Nickel palladium and Platinum. Collaborators came from the joint Institute for nuclear research at Duna in Russia the department of nuclear physics at the University of Bratislava in Slovakia and the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland.
