It is obvious that deca did not think about the environmental Impact this decision will have. Has deca considered where All of these plastic bags will end up. Here at Hohenfels there is no plastics re cycling. Many of the people working at Hohenfels live in communities where there Are no plastic recycling programs. Therefore most plastic grocery bags from the commis sary will Erid up in the army Landfill in Gra Fenohr. I heard that the Landfill in Gra Fenohr will last Only another year because people Are not recycling. This action by deca to use plastic bags will further shorten the life of the Grafen Wuhr Landfill. Paper bags can easily be recycled both on Post and on the Economy. In addition paper bags use some recycled paper. Paper is also a renewable resource be cause new Trees can be planted to replace the ones that Are Cut Down. Plastic is made from Petroleum which is a nonrenewable resource. The representative from deca did not mention whether the new plastic bags would be made from Post consumer recycled plastic which would require less Oil than those made with no recycled plastic. Second because plastic bags do not have the capacity of paper bags shoppers will end up using More bags for the same amount of groceries. Three paper bags can hold 150 pounds of groceries it takes five plastic bags to hold the same amount. An even better solution is to avoid using either paper or plastic bags by using cloth bags. Large cloth bags can be bought at the Post Exchange smaller ones can be obtained inexpensively on the Economy. Cloth bags not Only hold More than paper or plastic bags but they Are reusable and washable. A cloth bag can be reused hundreds of times before it gets recycled into a dust rag. Like Many i joined the army primarily for the education benefits and i have fully utilized the 15 semester hours of tuition assistance that has been granted in the past. In the three years i have served i have managed to earn an associate s degree from the University of Maryland and am Well on my Way to earning a Bachelor s degree. This would not have been possible without tuition assistance. I will not be Able to achieve the education goals i had set for this year without full assistance. If i wanted to incur a debt by taking out a student loan i would t have joined the service in the first place.
