Bry Galov 20 a17324 trend debut preceded other civil rights landmarks trend from Back Page to be fair baseball is undeniably diverse in certain areas More and More players Are coming from Asia and especially latin America Accord ing to Lapchick 294 percent of players last season were latino and 24 percent were asian that Means 405 percent were minorities just below baseballs High of 42 percent in 1997 when evaluating opportunities for minorities in sports does it matter which minorities it does to Jimmie Lee Solomon executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioners office and an architect of this Springs inaugural civil rights game his concern is baseball could reach a Point where its too late to Stem the tide of indifference among Black fans baseball More than any other sport has a heritage that it links with african Ameri cans and Africa american participation said Solomon who is Black we dont want to lose that heritage that linkage but there Are economic reasons As Well he added the Africa american buying Power is significant to ignore Afri can american players and fans is really shortsighted from a business standpoint the growing disinterest already has affected Robinsons legacy Hunter said nowadays if you talk about Jackie Rob Inson or Hank Aaron a lot of Black kids dont even know who he is that pretty sad Hunter said a lot of parents there my age and they dont know who they Are so How Are they going to teach their kids pretty much if s at Home a lot of kids dont even know How important Jackie Rob Inson is to our history Hall of Famer Joe Morgan said that s unacceptable if youre an Africa american you should know what he did Morgan said Rachel Robinson and others say baseball is taking Steps to address the Issue with pro Grams such As rib reviving baseball in inner cities and the mob Urban youth Academy in Compton Calif teams and players including Hunter Are sponsoring projects that provide equip ment and teach baseball to intercity kids were very sensitive to the problem commissioner Bud Selig said i think for a Long time baseball unfortunately from the late 60s on moved away from the inner Cit ies maybe not even consciously but did but i think these initiatives Are going to be very very helpful most agree on this being Good at base Ball requires an Early Start the games nuances and specific skills make it difficult to play catchup As a teenager the numbers Are dwindling we recognize that Solomon said what s Ade quate i dont know whats adequate but i think baseball should strive to be representative of society in the country if s forming from i think that the Academy concept mar ried to the rib concept will begin producing results How Long i cant Tell you off the Field the significance of Robin sons debut is evident in nearly All Walls of life it was a cultural revolution or at least the precursor to one Robinsons first major league game came a year before the us army was Inte grated and seven years before Brown is Board of education the supreme court decision that ended Legal segregation in pub Lic schools the year after that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a White Man soon Martin Luther King or was leading the civil rights movement when Robinson first stepped on the Field for the dodgers much of America was still segregated but suddenly the National Pas time was not if i had an Opportunity to play with one person living or dead it would be Jackie Robinson just to get an Opportunity to hear some of his stories new York Yan Kees Star Derek Jeter said Robinsons Success paved the Way for hundreds of Black stars who followed from Aaron and Willie Mays to Ernie Banks and Bob Gibson baseball in general became sort of like a Symbol that everybody is going to get their turn at Bat if youre Good enough youd get your turn said Ken Singleton a three time Allstar who played in the majors from 197084 he changed the coun try indeed Robinson has come to represent so Many things we aspire to courage dignity determination Equality resolve Perse Verance Justice on sunday baseball will commemorate the 60th anniversary of his debut with celebrations at ballparks around the majors the Centrepiece will be a ceremony in los Angeles before the dodgers play san Diego with Robinsons family on hand every player on the dodgers will Wear no 42 in Honor of Robinson a onetime exemption after baseball retired the num Ber on the 50th anniversary of his first game elsewhere Many big league stars including Ken Griffey or will Wear no 42 As Well Robinson the 1949 no map and a 311 career hitter helped Brooklyn win six pen Nants and a world series in his 10 seasons he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962 his journey want easy once he reached the majors Robinson endured an Avalanche of abuse that would be impossible for nearly anyone else to imagine pitchers threw at him opponents spiked him fans cursed him bigots threatened his life for him to walk that fire and be Success Ful on top of that its amazing Florida marlins Pitcher Dontrelle Willis said All the while Robinson kept his Compo sure and carried himself with class he didst strike Back he just played Ball run Ning the bases with relentless abandon and silently winning Over fans he had Little Choice he had promised Branch Rickey the dodgers executive who signed him that he retaliate for two years Rickey figured that was the Only Way Robinson would earn acceptance the Only Way the great Experiment would work Robinson died in 1972 at age 53 from heart problems and diabetes what we dont think of is what would have happened if Jackie had failed said Cal Tussman author of a new Book entitled after Jackie my Point is that Jackie is All around us right now and will be in 2047 this int somebody that we just put on a postage stamp and celebrate Hes really relevant a baseball writer Ronald Blum in new York a sports writers Dave Campbell and Jon Krawczynski in Minneapolis Stephen
