I took me three years to get Over my Walker Complex and today i finally did it he said after the race. Ovett said there were so Many Good run ners in the race that beforehand he was t sure How it was going to be run. Besides John Walker there was Steve Scott Ameri Ca s new mile sensation from the University of California Irvine Thomas Wessing Hage of West Germany and Jurgen Straub of East Germany. Scott had beaten both Scott came to the race with an indoor Victory Over Walker last Winter in san Diego. Then he beat Bay in Jamaica and Wilson Waiswa in june at los Angeles. He was expected to do great things. Before the race i had no idea How it was going to go Ovett said then during the race i was a bit surprised that John and Thomas were taking the Pace All the time which was t extremely fast. Then toward the end of the race i thought John or Thomas would go by but neither did. Ovett said that All season he had picked races that would improve his running and enable him to compete Here. He added that he was surprised How Well he Felt through out the race. I Felt even stronger towards the end and if i d really been pushed i think i could have improved my time another two or three seconds he said. Go with Walker surge his strategy was to go with Walker and Wessing Hage Down the final stretch then try to surge before the tape he said. I kept waiting for either of them to go by but they did the said. When i reached the 300-meter Mark and they did t go past i thought i d better go and see if i could make a Gap Between me and them then hang on if i had to. I accelerated then looked around going Down the final stretch and was sur prised that the nearest runner Wessing Hage was 10 meters behind me. I thought they Wessing Hage and Walker would be a foot or so Back breathing Down my Back. I was quite Lucky i Walker led or was near the front during the first two laps of the four Lap race but in the third Lap Ovett Wessing Hage and Straub took the Lead. In the final turn of the fourth Lap Walker running Well Back Sud Denly broke stride and quit the race. Ovett said it he did t think Walker s race was a failure. It was the first bad race he s run in a very Long career he said. Just to say suddenly he s a failure is really putting the Man Down because i think he s still a great athlete. I think there s always a lot of pressure on John because he is such a great athlete. In every race they expect him to win and if he does the s a failure. That s a lot of pressure to carry you before the race Walker said he was very tired after a Long season of racing. He has suffered an Achilles Tendon injury throughout the summer and he said his leg was very sore. After the race he said i m completely exhausted. At the moment i Don t know Why i did t Stop run Ning related Story Page 23 Ovett said he too was very tired and probably would go Home to rest for a week before More Competition. Wessing Hage s time was 3 36, Straub s was 3 37.5 and Scott s was 3 44.
