The Success mentioned above refers to Dex s recent signing with Columbia records after his triumphant visit to new York last october he has lived in Europe these past 15 years. The 54-year-old Tenor saxophonist whose dues paying included Tours of duty with Lionel Hampton Fletcher Henderson Louis Armstrong Billy Eckstine and Charlie Parker and numerous Small groups he led himself explained that he was due to open at new York s Stormville on East 58th Street. It was a miserable wintry night and Gordon said he would t have gone out to hear but when he arrived at the club the fans had packed the place. His return visits to the states had been few and far Between and Here was an Opportunity to see and hear the Man who influenced by Lester Young in his begin Ning Days had gone on to become the Model for Tenor greats Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. One of those fans present just happened to be Bruce Lundvall president of Columbia records a Tenor Freak As Gordon described him. Orrin Keepnews founder of the Riverside and Milestone jazz labels and co author of a pictorial history of jazz with Bill Grauer or was also among those present and raved that he did t know anybody was blowing such great straight ahead Tenor Lundvall insisted upon an immediate contract not even wanting to wait for Gordon s danish Steeple Chase contract to expire and the stage was set for a live. Recording to be made in december at the Village Vanguard one of the Apple s More permanent fixtures in the jazz club world. The result is Homecoming live at the Village Vanguard which appeared earlier this year and i enjoying considerable Success even making the charts As Gordon put it. Gordon Cut a second album for Columbia this past Spring which has Dex with 10 other musicians playing arrangements by trombonist slide Hampton and including Benny Bailey on trumpet Howard Johnson on Bari tone sax and tuba and West coaster Bobby Hutcherson vibes. Gordon thinks this album should be out sometime in october. He is returning to the states soon for a three Mont stay and it was disappointing to see so few americans in attendance at his recent Frankfurt gig. The ten Orist was in Fine form As he swung his Way through such stalwarts As Stella by Starlight ladybird Laura and Bird s he has a habit of ringing in familiar phrases from other songs during his improvisations such As old Man River Santa Glaus is coming to town and even flight of the Bumblebee which he maintains Are just something that happens.
