By Kiley Armstrong associated press Ith the kids grown Susie Buffett could Wile away the hours in a Wicker chair on the Sun porch of her sprawl ing Home in a fashionable Omaha neighbourhood basking in the warmth of wealth. Or she could face up to the stomach knots of stage fright and the Chance of failure and launch a career As a professional Singer. Which she did. It s As if once you be paid All your Bills you can just sleep All Day she said relaxing in a Bright yellow chair in the family room. What am i supposed to do sit around and eat Bon Bons i m kind of a classic Case of women wanting to think their lives have meaning. You re not that old at 45. I m not a person who s Ever played Bridge or Golf. I have always been sort of Independent. I sing to keep my soul the ambition that eventually would Lead to new York cabarets began in this room with a microphone and some singalong records. Then she auditioned for her Friend Eunice Denenberg. I Sang with my Back to Eunice. I could t look at her i was so petrified Buffett said. After All she had t performed in Public since a Charity event at Omaha Central High 12 years earlier. Denenberg helped her get an audition at an Irvington neb., restaurant. Later she Sang at Omaha s French cafe and last year she moved up to the new York Caba ret Buffett a Petite Brunette trades her Blue jeans for Slinky gowns and sparkling ensembles when she goes on stage. Her resonant Mellow contralto lends itself to everything from jazz to blues to Broadway hits. One of the Best things was going to new York she says. I was just a person singing there. They Don t know me As Warren Buffett s wife. Warren Buffett is a successful and influential business Man whose assets in enterprises ranging from newspapers to insurance to Candy have been estimated at More than a billion. If you have Money then people tend to forget All the other elements about you Susie Buffett says. I always hate things that separate me from she says it s no longer a big thing to her when people View her act out of curiosity. When they come Back again it s not out of curiosity. I m sure people went to see Liza Minnelli at first because she was Judy Garland s although friends have helped her get auditions she does t have an Agen Buffett says no one is doing me any favors because of Warren. The people in new York did t hire me for any other reason than because i m a besides moral support from her husband whom she Calls her biggest fan mrs. Buffett says she got immedi ate understanding from her children Susie 24, Howard 22, and Peter 19. I did t want to Embarrass my children. But they understood immediately that i needed to do this. I really love sharing that with being a performer mrs. Buffett says is kind of opposite of being a Mother. I be spent my life taking care of other people. Now i feel like i have to take my Vitamin and do my exercises. I m not used to the care and feeding of Susan Susie and Howard Are married and Peter is studying music at Stanford University. But when Peter is Home he and his Mother attend concerts and often sit up late at night listening to music together. Music has been a part of the buffets lives for Many years. During their College Days Warren Buffett won Susie s attentions by playing the ukulele with her father a Man Dolin player. It was obvious i was not no. 1 with her. But he mrs. Buffett s father became very pro me. It was two against one Buffett says. Buffett s musical audience was not always so responsive. I borrowed a trombone once when my daughter was Small. She cried when i played no family problems have been caused by the contrast ing careers he says because we be always done our own although mrs. Buffett Only recently stepped into the limelight Buffett says it s not the first time he s been introduced As Susie Buffett s she s a very solid person he says. People rally around her and that s Fine mrs. Buffett s immediate plans include an oct. 15 Benefit for new York University. Ill probably be scared she says. People Are paying $1,000 to be where i m going to sing. People at that Benefit will be accustomed to being entertained by the meanwhile she says she would be Happy to sing any place where i like the people who own the nightclub or the by Erma Bombeck at wits end one of the most personal experiences i be shared with readers Over the past 13 years was the occasion of sending my last child to school. Boy How i had lusted for that Day. I was going to have All my stomach Muscles Back by lunch go to the bathroom without Locking the door pull the shades and sing duets with barbra Streisand and Burn my maternity clothes. The statute of limitations had run out and i had won but there was no exhilaration in my Victory watching the baby sit pathetically at the curb. I thought of the woman he was going to miss Chal dust or whatever. And i wrote miss Chal dust give him patience and gentleness. Please have a soft Lap and a warm smile. I submit to your tender Loving care my son who is a Little shy and a lot stubborn. Who can t Cope yet with zip pers that stick or buttons on sweaters that Don t come out even. One who makes his 5s sideways and does t know to is from a i re son the door. I May sue you for alienation of affection but for the moment god bless those Small pathetic scared children who Are sitting out on the curbs for the first time Don t have their own column. If they did they might confess that they did t have breakfast this morning because they could t Swallow. They did t sleep Well last night. They re afraid. Afraid they la get lost. Afraid they la goof up. Afraid they la look different. Afraid they la be called upon. Afraid they won t find the Straw for their milk. Afraid they la lose their lunch Money. Afraid they won t get to the restroom on time or Ever. Afraid someone will laugh at their name. Afraid they won t find a Friend. Afraid the wind will blow their papers out of their hands. Afraid of you. One of the most poignant insights into a child s venture into education comes from a Book written by Albert Cullum called the Geranium on the window Sill just died but teacher you on. Alt deals with an insensitivity of the feel Ings of children and what they Are going through. This is one of my favourites. I have a Messy desk i have milk Money that Rolls i have a Lazy Pencil a Book that won t open a Mouth that whispers. I have a Zipper that does t want to Homework that won t work and a hand that throws crayons. I have a shirt that s out shoelaces that won t tie. And sometimes i wet my pants but never on miss Chal dust. This is a Day for All the love you have to give. C 1977 Field enterprises inc
