European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 01, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday october 1, 1977 the stars and stripes Page 19 weather report overblown by Joe Weisel jazz writer a recording of Ravel s Bolero swelling on the near ceiling High stack of speakers heralded the appearance of weather report at Frankfurt s Offenbach Sta Thalle recently. And the boys in the band on stage Midway through a european big Hall concert tour went on and out Forte a the French composer s world s longest it was a record Selling concert Al but two numbers the group played Are from their current Best Selling heavy weather album. Actually i enjoy the album when i play it at Home but then i can adjust the volume so that my eardrums will last a few More years. And it was disappointing to hear the numbers played live almost note for note As they appear on the record a terrible waste of the talents of Zawinul and Shorter who have demonstrated such outstanding improvisational skills in the past. I suppose the jiggling and shuffling of bassist Jaco Pastorius add to his Charisma in some View ers eyes but i found them highly distracting and had the impression that he was in dire need of the sanitary facilities. The acoustics of the Hall were terrible to begin with it s basically a gym and the mind bending volume of the electronics made for one terrific Mush of sound which made difficult the selection of individual instrumental voices. Frenchman meets gypsies French violinist Stephane Grappell and the Diz Disley Trio Are appearing in a series of concerts with the German Gypsy group Hans he Weiss quintet. Their schedule is Berlin Hochschulz Der Kainste oct. 1 Disseldorf Robert Schumann Saal oct. 3 Munich Neuer Hercules Saal oct. 5 Stuttgart Liede Halle Bee Hoven Saal oct. 6. For the record. Bill Evans quintessence fantasy. Person Nel Evans piano Harold land Tenor sax Kenny Burrell guitar Ray Brown Bass Philly Joe Jones Drums. The album opens with Ken Wheeler s Sweet Dulci Nea a medium Tempo Waltz played in a Light and airy style with Gossamer solos from the piano and sax which leads to another three Quarter time piece Martina on which Evans states the theme on the first 16-bar chorus in a slow and gentle manner. Burrell picks up the next weather report on stage big speakers and set pieces designed to sell records to Rock fans. Sixteen with a single string Melody and then deftly plays around the Melody with Evans adding background Fili Gree from the keyboard. Sexist land tenderly Ca resses the Melody the next time through this hauntingly simple tune on which the Bridge is the same Melody As the be ginning and end verses just transposed to a Dif Ferent key a rarity in song writing. The last track on the first Side is a Short and Sweet two chorus solidly swinging up Tempo version of second time around which showcases the quartet As a unified group. Thad Jones s a child is born almost suffers from a too gentle birth in the Tortoise tempted opener of the second Side. It s a Good track on which to turn the lights Down Low mix the martinis just right and Lay Back and conceive of what these artists can do with a slow Tempo. Guitarist Burrell wrote the closer Bass face which gives master bassist Brown a vehicle to display his talents. Philly Joe does a double time bit on i hat while keeping single time on the ride cymbal on the beginning of the guitar chorus and the album closes out on a Bass note or rather notes during the last eight bars after the ensemble restates the theme. This is excellent late night music featuring a group of outstanding musicians work ing nicely together. The Bass work is impeccable and the drumming is gentle but masterful throughout.
