Richard m. Silcox a Cook for the 1st signal in at Kleber Cavern Here got the bad news in Janu Ary lose 82 pounds by september or find another line of work. Silcox completing his third hitch was called to take a physical exam in preparation for his fourth enlistment in september. The 6-foot Cook flunked the physical because he weighed 285 pounds 82 pounds More than regulations allow since army chief of staff Gen. Bernard w. Rogers declared War on fat by re writing the regulations so that a Soldier can forget about re enlisting if he is even one Pound overweight. Silcox said he was a Little confused at first about being told to shed the excess poundage. I be always been overweight but i be never had any trouble re enlisting before he said. I came in the army in 1968 and weighed 278 pounds. I los weight in Basic Down to about 220 pounds then when i got out i went right Back up to where i was during a tour in Vietnam the native of Greenfield ind., got Down to 240 pounds but when he returned to the states he married and quickly gained 50 pounds and when he arrived in Ger Many three years ago he weighed 295 pounds. He said he had tried an army weight control program but did t keep at it and his weight stayed near the 300 Pound Mark. In september 1976 Silcox joined the Kaiserslautern chapter of tops take off pounds sensibly. I enjoyed it and lost 10 pounds he said. Then i got involved in Field duty and did t go Back until january when i knew i had to lose weight to he also a coined the Usa eur weight control program and an army dietitian put him on a 1,200-calorie diet. I promised my commanding officer that i would stay on their diet do exactly what they told me and if i lost weight i lost weight and if i did t i did to said Silcox who attended weekly tops meetings and also began an exercise program of his own. I ran one or two Miles a Day. I did sit ups and deep knee bends every night before i went to bed. I went to the gym on thursdays and worked out for about two hours then took a Sauna and went to tops. On Friday nights i he even stopped tasting his own cooking asking other Cooks to do it for him. Still just being around food was difficult for him so in March he asked to be relieved from cooking and As signed to the truck that picks up the facility s daily rations. Within six months his weight went from 285 pounds to 193 pounds a loss of 92 pounds. His Waist shrank from 48 to 36 inches he lost 8 inches around his Chest and 3 inches from around his neck. It was hard he recalls. Staying on a diet gets tiresome you have to get off sometimes and but the splurging did t happen often and he was Able to record 15 consecutive weeks of weight loss at his tops meetings. Silcox credits his new slim shape to the encouragement and help he received from fellow tops members and his wife. He feels that without them he could t have lost weight and thinks that without their continuing help he May gain weight again. Ill probably be a member of tops for the rest of my life. I classify being overweight like being an alcoholic be cause an alcoholic will always be an Al Coholic. I la always have to watch what i eat or go Back to being what i was before he said. Now and then a slim . Richard Silcox holds a spoonful of Gravy for fellow Cook spec. 4 Jim Simmons to taste for him. Silcox shown at right when he weighed in at nearly 300 pounds lost 92 pounds in six months in order to meet the army s weight Stan Dards for reenlistment. He credits letting others do his tasting As help ing him i his reducing program.
