Phil Schmitten Italy quake strikes Home by Dan Synovec staff writer Fanna Italy is news of the May 1976 earthquake that jolted northeastern Italy did t deeply affect Many americans when it flashed across the . But it did upset one air Force no who was on leave in new York City from Malmstrom fab Mont. His parents live in this Small town near the Center of the devastating quake. I was visiting some friends in new York when i first heard the news of the earthquake said sgt. Marco Narduzzo a 23-year-old administrative clerk assigned to Aviano a s Security police Section. The first thing i did was attempt to Call Home. It took 12 hours to get through and when i did i found out that the House my parents live in was severely damaged and that my sister who was visiting friends in the nearby town of Buia was missing said Narduzzo. The sergeant said it took him 72 hours to make a second Telephone Call to his parents and when he did get through again he Learned that his sister was All right. He said he then returned to Malmstrom and requested a humanitarian reassign ment to Aviano. It took the air Force Only 20 Days to approve and process his request he said. Narduzzo was born in the . While his father was working in new York. He said that in 1968, his father was injured on the Job and retired with a pension. His parents then decided to return to their Homeland. The italian people who live in the area and who were affected by the earthquakes really appreciate the help they have received from the americans Narduzzo said adding that four months after the May 6 earthquake the area was once again hit by a major earthquake. Nearly half the Village was wiped out said Narduzzo. My parents House was built by my great Grandfather in 1895. The estimated Cost for repairing it is $32,000. My father suffered a heart attack after the May earthquake and had another one Fol lowing the september earthquake. He has improved but he can t do heavy work the sergeant said. He said that the italian government is providing Relief funds so the people of the Region can rebuild their Homes. When i returned Here the people weren t the same he said. They seemed to be in a state of the Narduzzo family lives in the Kitchen and living room of their House and in a trailer set up at the Back of the House that was loaned to them by the italian govern ment. Many people of the town live in pre fabricated houses erected by . Air Force civil engineers during the Relief Effort after the May 6 earthquake said Narduzzo. Narduzzo said that he has tried to talk his parents and two Sisters into returning to new York. They won t go he added shaking his head. Italians Are very his father said that the town located about 20 Miles North of Aviano has been hit by a number of aftershocks and some of them Are pretty Nasty. It was a Jolt. We did t realize the amount of damage because it hit at night his father said. But the next morning we could see the results of the earthquake and it was he said that the morale of the people has dropped and that they Aren t the same any More. And the problem Here is that the ground has t stopped shaking he added.
