Dale e. Holland of Augusta a. Until i met Otto i had never used anything but a knife. He s teaching me How to use Over the years i be accumulated quite a set of chisels said Otto Stoll who has lived in Augsburg since 1946. From Dale Holland i m learning How to use a Stoll who fled his native Czechoslovakia right after world War ii has worked at the military Hospital Here for More than 31 years. Holland has been assigned Here since 1974. Although acquainted since 1974, they Only Learned of their Mutual interest last went into Otto s office one Day and there on his desk was this Little wooden figure said Holland. I asked him about it and he said he had carved it. Since then we be spent a lot of time together exchanging techniques and their styles Are different. While Stoil s figures Are quite detailed Holland s tend to be More abstract. Their methods Are also make drawings from every Angle of each figure said Stoll. Once i have those done it s Clear in my mind just How that figure will look. I then take a Block of Wood and Cut a Little Here and a Little there until it s i can t do it that Way said Holland. I like to make Sid View drawings on the Block of Wood and then Cut the main excess away with a band saw. That helps me keep my both men Are working on carving their own chess sets. Stoll is patterning his characters after Sterix the French comic strip about the Battles Between the romans and gallic tribesmen. Holland s set gets its characters from the comic strip wizard of what started me on my set said Stoll was when my Boss a Captain went to Oberammergau and paid 1,200 do for a chess set. I thought to myself for that kind of Money i can make my own i make frequent trips to Oberammergau myself said Holland. The differ ence is that i Don t go there to buy wooden figures. I go there to learn. Before i go Home i want to take a leave and attend one of their classes on Wood carving. While i m not having any problems with animal or human figures i am finding it difficult to carve a human face. I Hope to learn that in Oberammergau my first Wood carving project was a Clown i carved for my daughter about 10 years ago said Stoll. Since then i be carved a couple Madonnas and now this chess set. I have kept the other pieces but Don t know about the chess set. I be been . Dale Holland displays some of the necklaces and charms he has carved. Offered some Nice prices for it. I might sell it if a Good enough offer comes along the first thing i Ever carved was a set of dogs i did for my girl Friend As a teen Ager laughed Holland. After i came into the army i kind of got away from it having too Many other things to do. I got Back into it Early last Holland does t find it hard to stay in practice. People Are always coming to me wanting me to carve something for them he said. I be even had some come to me with a photograph of an object they want me to carve a copy of. And of course there s a steady Market for necklaces and charms. Those Are easy to make but if i make too Many it gets to be like mass production and that s not As much despite their differences Stoll and hol land agreed that it s a relaxing Hobby.
