European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 2, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday september 2, 1978 the stars and stripes Page 11 Fulda s unsatisfactory Nursery constitutionally we Are not allowed to sign away the rights of our children. Furthermore in our society child abuse and neglect Are considered to be horrible crimes punishable by Law. And yet parents in the Fulda Community Are allowed and even encouraged to put heir children into a place that is in Fla Grant violation of safety standards. I m re Ferring to the base Nursery. The Nursery is in a basement where it would be hard for children and even adults to get out of windows above their Heads. First they would have to Knock out the screens which have been nailed in place. The size of the play area is for less than 10 children and yet 30 is the number nor Mally taken. This number is increased in the summer months. I m familiar with the answers to my questions. There in t enough Money or we Don t have any do these justify putting Young children into a life endangering situation i think not. I feel that the parents in the Fulda Community need a Safe place to leave our Chil Dren when we work shop or go out for the evening. The one very important word Safe seems to have been overlooked by too Many people. It is important that every Parent who uses the Nursery is aware of the safety a european edition col. Billy e. I want to give you some thing else to think about. If something does happen to your child it won t be you who is burned to death or crushed in the explosion of a building. However you will be responsible. Also responsible is any person or any authority who overlooks the situation or any one who supports it by paying for free babysitting for clubs non profit organizations or individuals. You will have to live with this the rest of you life. Can you can your child be replaced mine can t. Carla s. Ridener Fulda Germany editor s note it. Col. Moran a. Mckenzie Deputy Community commander replies those of us in the Fulda Community directly involved with Kinderland Nursery Are aware of the conditions of the Nursery As they exist at the present time. Due to an acute shortage of buildings and space the Nursery is presently located in the basement of a housing area building. This present location has been made As Safe As possible As has been borne out by frequent in inspections and visits from preventative Medicine personnel. An exception to policy has been issued allowing the Nursery to be located in the basement. The exception to policy letter also makes the following statement per Taining to the safety of the children rapid orderly egress for the building in the event of an emergency is the Princi pal reason for the requirement to locate child care centers on ground floor level. During the recent inspection it was noted that All of the named child care centers did have exits for emergency egress even though some of them were operating in either basements or a second floor area therefore the Basic intent of this Standard is being met the Nursery supervisor and staff have held two fire drills within the last 30 Days. During the first Drill 34 children were evacuated in two and one half minutes. And during the second Drill 17 children were brought out in one minute. The Community is faced with offering a Nursery in the present location or no Nur Sery at All. It is the feeling that a Nursery is needed and is essential to this Community. We eagerly look Forward to the changes in the Nursery and preschools throughout Europe due to the proposed takeover by reminder All letters to the editor must contain full printed name and address of the writer and must be signed. Unsigned letters will not be considered for publication. Writers Are encouraged to include phone number and Economy address especially if they desire a fast reply. Letters to the editor Are we encouraging violence i would like to voice my opinion on a matter that has concerned me for some time both As a Parent and a member of the armed forces. It seems that society and the military Community Are plagued by an unholy Trinity of evils of late namely alcohol drugs violence and All the misery they engender. Our tax dollars Are constantly drawn off to fight these evils and hardly anyone these Days is not Ever touched by them in some Way. My question is this Why do we spend time and Money with our right hand trying to control or eradicate these things while we actually push and encourage them with our left hand my specific reference is the late great movie saturday night fever with its unhealthy dose of the above three evils along with much More. It was amusing in parts and it probably did portray the Street scene with great Verity however i certainly was not pre pared for what i saw when i went. The a rating was of no help. Evidently the ratings Are very subjective and cover too wide of a category if they class saturday night fever with a Good science fiction movie like Demon seed. Another specific reference is a so called science fantasy Magazine "1984" i think1 happened to pick up. In it was a photo Story of a futuristic society where people hold open season on people each fall for purposes of cannibalism ending with a full Page drawing every graphic of a Man tearing the fetus from a pregnant woman he had shot and com menting to his son nearby that it was prime filet this particular Magazine was Dis played alongside the children s comics with others just As Gross. While i am not for censorship i do believe that the authorities who Are in charge of our movie and Book fare should reconsider some of their choices and that such things should be constantly monitored and evidently much better than they Are now. After All. We have yet to get deep Throat on the movie circuit or Hustler Magazine in the Bookstore yet. Those things referenced above Are in most ways just As offensive. I really believe that the healthy minded generally find such things offensive but the immature and unstable have always found them to be a great influence on their thinking. And it is the immature and unstable that Are most caught in the alcohol drugs violence trap. Why encourage and sometimes even glorify them an ounce of prevention is still Worth a Pound of cure. A. Sgt. Andrew w. Smith Pitburg Germany commenting on sen. Eagleton after Reading sen. Eagleton s remarks i have nearly come to the conclusion that Many members of Congress including sen. Eagleton will say just about anything about what Ever they please merely to keep their name before the Public. It s As if they were saying look folks i m still Here some people May say that this is Only to be expected from i politician. If that is the Case then we Are in More trouble than most of us have realized. Sen. Eagleton s announced intention is to trim the fat from the department of de sense and the branches of service which make up Dod. While i wholeheartedly agree with his intentions i must vehemently oppose the Means by which he Hopes to accomplish his ends. To describe appropriated fund activities cafes and the commissaries As fat is pure drivel and goes a Long Way toward explaining Why the Man has never succeeded in a bid for a higher and More responsible office. He Speaks of streamlining and leaning out our armed forces. Perhaps he should clean up his own backyard before he criticizes others. Compare his working hours to those of the average Soldier Sailer or airman. Compare salaries pensions fringe benefits social and economic prestige and then see How Many congressmen women Are required to pack up move perhaps Halfway around the world every two or three years often onshore notice How Many of them have had to drive in a third or Forth hand rolling wreck As much As fifty or a Hundred Miles just so they could get food or clothes they could afford and How Many of them go to a Job each morning knowing that by Nightfall they could be separated from their families for a week a month or a year wading through Rice paddies desert Sand or freezing Snow while some fool tries hard to kill them. No i Don t think sen. Eagleton has done his Homework very Well. And if he succeeds in achieving the Means to his end then he and All in our government who assist or encourage him will have done a gave disservice to All who Wear the uniform of our country.
