Grubb 31, was hitting .268 with a career High of 14 homers and 61 runs batted in for the indians this year. He was eligible to be come a free agent at the end of this season and had not reached agreement with the indians on a new contract. Grubb came to the indians from san Diego on dec. 8, 1976, along with Catcher Fred Kendall in Exchange for outfielder George Hendrick. Kendall was traded to the Boston red sox earlier this season.
