European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 2, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday september 2, t978 the stars and stripes Page 19 memories of fallen giants by Joe Weisel jazz writer since the last jazz talk column reports save come in on the death of two giants in the Field of jazz 2 violinist Joe Venuti and trumpeter Singer Louis Prima. The accomplishments of both have been hailed in other stories in this publication and i won t dwell on that aspect of their careers in this limited space. But i d like to Remi Nisce a bit about a meeting with Venuti several years Back when my son was with me Venuti was the first jazz musician he met. It was backstage at Frankfurt s and Venuti in his late seventies older according to some biographer was featured with the dutch swing College band on a 60-Date concert tour. With timidity i approached him in his dressing room knowing that he did t have much time for critics or writers having referred to the former once As empty my trepidation was Short lived however As Venuti turned out to be a gracious Host and seemed even eager to talk about himself and his 22 grandchildren. I like to think it was the presence of my own son then 17, that broke the ice. Venuti reminisced with us about his world War i Days when he and guitarist Eddie Lang his Long time musical partner wound up in France in the same outfit under general Pershing s ref command. Pershing it turned out was a jazz fan and when he found out Venuti and Lang were serving under him he bestowed bennies such As staff cars and release from duties for the privilege of having them perform at his Headquarters and staff gatherings Venuti also told about exchanging cigarette coupons for French currency until the French found out the Cou Pons weren t really . Money. I m Happy i had the Opportunity to meet this Man whose influence is obvious in the popularity of the violin in today s music re Jean Luc Ponty Michal Urbaniak letc., and his presence on the jazz scene will be sorely i missed. Re an Stuttgart s Bill Dalzell demonstrated Why Louis Frima will also be missed when he ran 50 non Stop min utes of Prima s music on his jazz just for you show last monday night.
