Driven by Howard Beissinger speedy Somollia won the first heat in 1 55 with Flor Ida pro moved to second on an interference Call by Brisco Hanover who was moved to third. Florida pro piloted by George Sholty took the second heat also in 1 55 with speedy Somollia second and Jim Miller with Brisco Hanover third. The 1 55 heat was the fastest Ever trotted in a harness race. And the accumulated time of the three heats was also a world record for the one mile distance. The former trotting Mark was set in the hambletonian last year when Green Speed won in successive heats of 1 55 3-5. The All time trotting Mark which was not in a race but against the clock was set a year ago in Indianapolis by 4-year-old nevele Pride in 1 54 3-5. The 53rd renewal of the hambletonian Kingpin event for 3-year-old Trotters devel oped into a blazing Battle among the three speedy Colts. Double mint driven by Peter Haughton and count s Pride piloted by his father Bill Haughton never really were contenders although they too were regarded As Speed demons. Count s Pride finished fifth in the first heat and last in the second and was scratched by Haughton who was seeking his third straight hambletonian Victory with a horse that previously had the Best time of the season. He won with Lindy s Pride in 1969 and went on to capture the triple Crown that year and with speedy Cowrt in 1971. Speedy Somollia became the first three generation hambletonian Winner. His sire was speedy Crown and his grandsire was speedy Scot who won in 1963. In the first heat Driver Miller said i thought in the stretch Brisco Hanover would Trot past speedy Somollia but he brushed George Sholty s sulky and the judges sent me Down to third As they should  in the first heat the Quarter times were 30, 58 3-5, and 1 26 2-5. Speedy Somollia went the last half in 56 2-5, an unofficial fastest half Ever recorded for a Trotter. As the Battle for survival continued into the second heat speedy Somollia led most of the Way with Florida pro and Brisco Han Over right with him. Entering the stretch speedy Somollia led by half a length Over Florida pro with Brisco Hanover a half length Back. In a great stretch drive Florida pro overtook speedy Somollia at the wire to win. By one fourth length. The quarters of the second heat were 28 1-5, 57 2-5 and 1 25 3-5. It was another struggle among the three speedy Colts in the third heat with Brilliant Yankee joining them for the first half mile. Speedy Somollia took the Lead entering the stretch and fought off the challenges of Brisco Hanover and Florida pro to win by about a length. The times of the final heat were 29, 59 1-5, and 1 27 4-5. Speedy Somollia paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.10. Brisco Hanover returned $3.60 and $2.10 and Florida pro was $2.10 to show. The order of finish 1. Speedy Somollia h. Beissinger 1-2-1. 2. Florida pro g.
