He is president of the International society for Krishna consciousness new Brindaban a 1,000-acre farm at Moundsville w.va., where some 200 Hare Krishna devotees including about 60 children Are building a self sustaining Community and eight elaborate palaces. Linda or Kutila As she now is called has Given up painting to raise Pritham 4, and Orinda 14, look after 15 other Little girls and perform such traditionally feminine tasks As cooking and sewing. Kul Adri 29, and Kutila 26, do not live together anymore. Their paths Cross at mealtime at religious classes and sometimes during the course of the work Day. They took vows of celibacy when they married and do not have sex except to have Chil Dren. Both insist their relationship is close their lives simple and satisfying despite hostile neighbors and marginally adjusted parents. But the transition to their new life was initially painful at least for Kutila a sunburned blonde draped in a Long flowing Blue skirt and shawl. In the beginning she was t As attracted As i was said Kul Adri a Swarthy sensitive looking Man. Then i became very serious about  As Kutila tells it she and Arthur were living together when All of a sudden he called Rne on the phone and told me to come to the Temple. He was All shaved up. I did t even recognize him. Everything was All mixed up she recalled during an interview in the Community s furnished guest room As. Her daughter Orinda tugged at her skirt. I had never seen anything like this. I m from a Middle class background. I was used to country  in an attempt to forget about Arthur and the Krishna she took off for Mexico for eight months. She lived in Ideal circumstances next to a Waterfall and spent the time painting. But it stayed with me Kutila said. Every time i ate meat or had sex i heard a voice saying it was wrong. I drove for four straight Days and ended up Back  the farm to which Kutila returned is on what is commonly called Mcreary s Ridge 10 Miles outside of Moundsville the Marshall county seat and site of the West Virginia Penitentiary. A Large Blue sign now looms on the Hilltop its White Block letters spelling out Hare Krishna  the sign is partially blackened the result of a Cross burning on the fourth of july. The 10-year-old new Brindaban named after Krishna s Birthplace in India is the largest Krishna Community in the nation in terms of acreage. With 200 members it also is the largest Rural Community of devotees. Los an Geles with 400 members is the largest Urban commune  a recent summer midday men with shaved Heads Clad in pants and work boots Hoed and weeded rows of vegetables in the Community Garden. Women in Graceful saris scurried from one building to another followed by Little girls in Long skirts and sneakers. They looked far less jarring in the West Virginia Hills than on City Street Corners where they Are often found. He de scribed the Community s Orchard Vineyard and cows and its plans for formal gardens fountains and wrought ironwork. At present new Brindaban is a Muddy Motley collection of buildings residences and temples that includes shops for casting printing Marble and woodworking and Art. It looks industrious but not yet aesthetic. Kul Adri dressed in White pants and a White to shirt " most people because i Wear a Robe and have my head shaved would like to Cut my throat.7 " with a Krishna illustration on it talked about the Krishna life. Children at age five or six go to a guru Kula school where they Are taught sanskrit Reading writing and math. There is much less anxiety and they mature faster he said adding the school promotes Independence and camaraderie. Later he acknowledged he was talking Only about boys. Girls attend a separate Day school and remain at Home where they Are taught to Cook sew and look after other children. Kutila said instructional materials used at the boys school Are All published by the Krishna movement. No books outside the culture Are used. Kul Adri said women can teach or do secretarial and construction work. But generally we find they re very adapted to taking care of children so Why not let them do it he called it a matter of efficiency rather than exploitation. It s not a woman s position to manage men he said. Separation of the sexes is one of the first things a visitor notices on visiting the farm.
