Up Cale Yar Borough won his fourth Southern 500 Stock car race beating Darrell Waltrip by 3.1 seconds monday after a four car pile up knocked defending Champion David Pear son out of the running in the $225,000 event. The 38-year-old Timmonsville ., Rac ing Star this year s Leader in both Points and Money on the Lascar circuit drove his Oldsmobile at an average Speed of 116.828 Miles per hour before 70,000 fans nearly 18 . Slower than the record he set while winning the 1973 Southern 500. Yarborough who earned $30,175 for monday s Victory also won this race in 1968 and 1974. Waltrip driving a Chevrolet tried to close the Gap in the last seven laps of the 367-Lap race but was unable to overtake Yarborough who flashed across the finish line about one tenth of a mile in front. Waltrip who took Over ailing Richard Petty s Chevrolet after his own car broke Down was followed in the final order by David Marcis Terry Ladante and Bobby Allison. Yarborough in command most of the race moved in front for the final time on the 261st Lap after the Lead had changed hands 21 times among 10 Drivers and the caution Flag had gone up nine times. The four car pileup that knocked Pear son out of the race came on the second turn of the 168th Lap. Two Drivers a. K. Ulrich and Grant Adcox were injured in the wreck and were taken to a nearby Hospital for a rays and treatment. The wreck occurred when Adcox s car spun around. Coo Coo Marlin s Chevrolet collided with Adcox s vehicle and Pearson slowed into both. When Ulrich s car ran into the pileup a slight fire broke out. Marcis the no. 2 Lascar Driver in Points this season was forced to abandon the car in which he started the race but later took Over Petty s vehicle after Petty complained of rib pains.
