European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 12, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes tuesday september 12, 1978 Mcaa Cage meet go. Coach advocates tourney with every division i school Bybe Abrams staff writer Wiesbaden Germany is can you imagine a basketball tournament embracing All the colleges in the Mcaa s division i one of America s outstanding coach scan. The More schools we can involve in basketball tournament Competition the better it is for basketball new Georgia basketball coach Hugh Durham said Here recently. In fact i would like to see a tournament involving every division i school in the Mcaa. That would be a Way to determine a True National Champion. The immediate reaction to such a suggestion is that s asking too much. It s impossible it just can t be done Well if you take that approach it won t be done. But has anyone actually sat Down and tried to devise such a tournament Durham asked. It could be done. A Field of 256 teams would be Ideal but i Don t think there Are quite that Many colleges in the Mcaa s division i. So the tournament would have to be organized starting at a District level and advancing up through state regional and National brackets. Because some of the major conferences Are so Strong some of their third place teams Are better than some of the smaller league champions i Don t be Lieve there is anyway you can come up with a big tournament that would be completely fair to All the competing teams. But this Type of tournament would be a fairer Way to determine a True Champion. It would take about a month to conduct and i feel it would be an exciting added. Durham who moved to Georgia after 12 seasons As head coach at Florida state where his teams posted a 230-95 record is in Germany along with Tulane basketball coach Roy Dan Orth and Southeastern con Ference official Dale Kelley to conduct the Safe basketball coaches and officials clinic monday and tuesday Here at Lind sey air station. They will also go to Mildenhall England to run the . Conference portion of the clinic sept. 13-14. Denny Bishop a Western athletic con Ference official will handle a similar clinic at hell Nikon Greece sept. 11-13 is photo Grandy Georgia s Hugh Durham likes school s program and in Ciurlik Turkey sept. 17-18. Although Durham favors a nation wide Type of tournament he in t truly con Vinced that the expansion of the current Mcaa championship tournament to a 40 team format is that Good for basketball. I know i said the More teams we can involve in tournaments the better it is for basketball and that i sound contradictory when i say that i Don t think the expansion to 40 teams is that Good. However if the Mcaa would expand to 64 teams that would be an Ideal improvement. The reasoning behind that is that expansion to a 64-team Field would leave perfect bracketing and the championship playoff teams would have to play the same number of games to get to the title game Durham said. But under the new format that is not the Case. The 40-team setup will give More Quality teams a crack at the National championship but some teams will be at a definite disadvantage in that they would have to play More games to win the title. In order to get Down to a perfect bracket 16 teams would have to play a preliminary game and that would be putting extra pressure on them. I certainly Don t believe any team should be Given any kind of an Edge when you re talking about the Mcaa championships Durham added. The trend in College basketball currently is leaning to conducting Post season tournaments to determine conference representatives in the Mcaa championships and although his metro seven Champion ship flu team was upset in tournament play last year Durham is a believer of such Competition with certain modifications. We lost in the finals of the metro tournament last year but we still got to go to the Mcaa tournament because the metro non conference prep football bearcats hang on of nip Karlsruhe Karlsruhe Germany bad Kreuz Nach built up a 13-0 Lead then Hung on to take a 13-12 Victory Over Karlsruhe Here saturday in the non conference High school football opener for both teams. The bearcats first to came after a 60 Yard March in five plays with Pearson s 20-Yard scamper off tackle being the big play Karlsruhe mishandled the second half Kickoff and wound up with the Ball at their own two. If it weren t for that fact i would be opposed to Post season tournaments deciding the Mcaa representatives said Durham. I Don t feel that a team which Domi nates its league should be deprived of an Opportunity to compete on the National level because it might have a Flat Day while a weaker team happens to play its Best game of the year. I think if we Are going to have these tournaments the Mcaa should devise a general format. Perhaps the league Cham Pion should get the automatic berth and the tournament Winner the conference s second Slot. Or possibly a double Elimina Tion tournament could be held. It is unlikely that one of the weaker teams would survive a double elimination event. Any format should be tested for a couple of years and if it in t working out. Then it could be Durham continued. However i think the general idea of the Post season tournament is very Good. The not so Good teams still have something to strive for the interest builds up to the Post season tournament and the schools come off better financially. Inflation is a problem in the . And the schools also feel the economic crunch so something like this is Good for the Over All program and for the improvement of College Basket Ball Durham added. Durham won 14 letters four each in basketball and baseball and three each in foot Ball and track at East High school in Louisville ky., but until he took the geor Gia Job last Spring his life has been All Florida state. He played basketball there took Post graduate work there and served As assistant coach for six seasons before taking the head Job. Why did i leave he repeated a ques Tion. Well i thought it was time for a change. No established tradition although Georgia has t enjoyed very much basketball Success in quite a few years and although it does t have an established basketball tradition there Are quite a few positive things about making the move. Georgia is the dominant school in the state and school officials have taken a total commitment to the establishment of an excellent basketball program to go along with the established football program. The officials know that such a thing does t happen overnight so they have Given me a five year contract. There is a spacious facility on Campus which seats Well Over 11,000 compared to the 3,200-seat gymnasium at Florida state and there Are quite few Good basketball players being developed in the Georgia High schools. We had quite a Good recruit ing season so i m really optimistic about the change Durham said. Pride and performance Are two of Durham s standby words and he admits to that even when basketball is considered on an International level. . In class by itself i take a lot of Pride in basketball and i feel that nobody in the world can compete with the . In the game. People might say this in t necessarily so when you it into International basketball that the .has had to struggle in recent International championships like the olympics. We Aren t up there in soccer or ice hockey but in basketball the . Is far ahead of the Field. If we took our Best play ers and the people we Send to the olym pics Are far from our Best players because the really Good ones Are All playing pro basketball no one could Ever touch us. Heck we could get our 12 Best High school players train them under International conditions for a month and even they would be champions he said. Durham keeps in shape for the strenuous basketball coaching Campaign by play ing racquetball and Golf and doing a lot of jogging. He won the Florida open division racquetball championship in 1973 and took the senior titles in 1975, 1976 and 1977 and this year he took the Georgia senior title. I
