European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 24, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 14 the stars and stripes sunday september 24, 1978 proud to be part of Davis family1 after Reading the letters concerning bad treatment by the Davis Agency i feel that perhaps there Are some Points being missed. I wonder if anyone realizes the services extended by Davis. We Fly to 14 major Cit ies regularly including Hawaii and Spain. We can connect to any Airport in the states. The prices Are half of that which you would pay commercial however the flights Are on regular commercial airlines with on Board services the same As any regular commercial paying passenger would receive. We also offer a program where you can Fly first class at Low charter prices. Naturally when there Are approximately 180,000 passengers flying each year to All destinations it is possible that things sometimes Don t run As smoothly As we would like but let s not forget the service and prices. We do try our Best for example our flight on april 16 from los Angeles to Frankfurt changing planes in Chicago was late getting in from los Angeles but the Davis personnel in Chicago held the Over seas flight because there were Davis Pas sengers on the other flight due to Fly Over seas. Or like getting tickets to a relative in the states who needs to Fly overseas within a Day or two. As for Davis employees speaking for myself after handling a great volume of bookings each Day for which we Are our selves responsible sometimes i May not be As helpful As i should. But i do know that we All try to do our Best to assure a Good flight for each passenger. There is no other charter Agency that holds a three Day training class for new employees just to learn the business. As compared to the other agencies Davis with its 19 years of experience has a Good reputation and i am proud to be a part of the Davis family. Nancy Fritz Augsburg Germany letters of the editor 2nd-fiddle role of a military wife Davis Agency service praised As a satisfied customer i would like to speak in defense of the Davis Agency. During our tour in Germany All five members of our family As Well As friends and relatives have flown with Davis and had satisfactory service. Anyone with experience in air travel can Tell you that on every airline there is a possibility of a All planes Are Only machines the personnel Are Only human and neither Are perfect. When a problem occurs it makes a great Coffee break tale. People play can you top this with one horror Story after another. But let one satisfied customer go into de Tail about How the flight left on time the movie was great the food delicious the stewardess helpful and a great Yawn of boredom would break out. There is Good and bad about everything but the bad is unusual so makes the most interesting stories. Charter companies Are performing a needed service that is not provided by our government. Many families would be unable to afford to Fly at regular rates. Unlike cafes and american express Davis is not the Only game in town. And until the government allows the service member and dependents periodic free trips like Dod employees get i m going to keep flying Davis. Name withheld Kaiserslautern Germany this is in response to the recent letter in Praise of new hiring How Nice that the sponsor club manager can always count on getting his new Job at his level of training or better. How would he like to serve As a Busboy in his new assignment a dishwasher in the next and maybe a part time janitor in the move after that think of the wealth of experience he could gain and what kind of Job he could get when he retires in 20 or 30 years. At any rate he will have deserved retirement. He must be in an area rare in Europe where there Are All kinds of jobs available to dependents. An area where the local business is providing Good jobs to dependents of american servicemen dependents who can neither speak nor under stand their language. Either that or where the Economy is so Low that military people Are so Rich that their dependents do not need to work just like in the old Days when All the arrange ments were made As to who had prefer ence for the jobs available on base. Of course dependent wives Are not al ways the Best qualified people for the jobs family s bad effect on germans my husband and i have been living in a Small farming Village for two months. We have found that the germans Are As Friendly and cooperative As you Are. Our German landlord has adopted us. The Village people have gone out of their Way More than once for us. Our three year old is the first american to attend the local kindergarten. The wealth of knowledge we Are gaining Here can never be found on a guided tour. We decided Long ago not to take base housing and have been searching for econ omy apartments for other americans. Our landlord heard of a Large apartment House in a neighbouring Village but when he phoned the owner he refused to rent to americans. This Man said he was now renting to a Young american couple who party All the time. Their stereo was so loud that it disrupted the entire Street. But the couple refused to turn it Down forcing their Ger Man neighbors to close their windows. So consequently this Man will never again rent to americans. It s a shame that one family can have such a bad effect on so Many germans As their opinions will be passed on for generations. We Are All ambassadors and must re Spect the customs and traditions of this country. Our tour Here is Short but there will be americans in Germany forever. We must All be examples to open doors to future generations. Janet Mishler Hopf Isheim Germany car processing people praised whenever anyone writes your newspaper about nightmares resulting from hav ing to pick up a car at Bremerhaven port Don t believe the Nightmare. I just picked up my new car at the port and i found the people in the vehicle proc Essing Center to be outstanding. From the outside people who charged the Battery in my car in a driving rain and Gale Force winds and put on my License plates and inspected my car to the in Side people who checked my papers typed my forms and released my car i found Courtesy competency and efficient , the lines were Long and the weather bad. One smiling Young lady even apologized for the rain. My car showed no evidence of All the things i had heard about dents from improper handling missing antennae and radios sea water damage it was speckled with mud As was i after a walk across the reminder All letters to the editor must contain full printed name and address of the writer and must be signed. Unsigned letters will not be considered for publication. Writers Are encouraged to include phone number and Economy address especially if they desire a fast reply. Because of the Large volume of mail this column receives daily letters that Are Brief and to the Point have a much better Chance of being published. Storage lot in that driving rainout it looked Beautiful and performed flawlessly As i drove it Home to Karlsruhe. I Hope you la Sandwich this letter be tween the letters of complaint you get so often about the services we receive in overseas communities. The folks at Bremerhaven deserve a Pat on the Back. Allen Dale Olson Karlsruhe Germany available since the Only work they can usually get is what nobody else will do. This is True even in the states where most employers Are reluctant to give a Job to military dependents due to their Lack of retain ability. And when we manage to get work it is almost always at the Bottom level in a closed end position with minimum pay. If we happen to stay Long in one place we find that we re not eligible for any training programs since companies do not want to spend their Money training people who will move away so we Are doomed to the most menial most Boring least rewarding jobs. Once in a while when we manage to at Tain recognition no doubt through hard work and a longer than usual stay in one place we lose it All in our next move. If this Man had been an office clerk in one place a waiter in the next and a truck Driver in the one after that what would his qualifications be when the next Job Avail Able is for a typist with a thorough knowl Edge of a language he had never studied and even More How would he compete for the Job with another 30 people with preference status better qualifications and retain ability let me say that even when we Are very Well qualified for the Job at hand if we do not have preference status or Are already working or have been working with the military our chances Are Little less than non existent to get a decent Job. We even have to watch the late arrivals getting preference Over us because we did not work for the government before. Let me Point out that dependent wives in most cases Are looking for a Job be cause they need the Money unless they want to be locked in the House for the remainder of the tour. Even the prices to go to school Are More than we can afford while we Are Here. The Well qualified Retiree s wife Proba Bly has the advantage of knowing the local language since she has been living in the particular country out of Choice or convenience. She also should know that there Are always positions open for secretaries with terrific qualifications in the states particularly if their husbands Are retired. It s bad enough that a dependent wife puts 20 or 30 years of her life in the Mili tary without pay or retirement benefits. But while her husband does not need even her signature to dispose of her household and children for which she worked both at Home and outside at least As much As her husband did she needs a Power of attorney from her husband even to lift a Finger and her husband s signature on anything she does. She has to be dependent on her Hus band s Good will and ability to take care of her for life provided he lives Long enough and wishes to support her. She has to depend on the husband s willingness to put a Large share of his not too Large pay and later his retirement just to insure that she will not be condemned to extreme poverty in her old age. Is it not ironic that in a country where everybody Speaks loud about Freedom and human rights nothing is Ever said in pub Lic about the rights of these women even the right to work is denied them in this Case by a husband who is obviously benefiting by his wife s work but is not concerned about her satisfaction on the Job or about her happiness. And is it not Nice that he will probably be a manager when he retires will have his retirement plus All the education and other benefits provided to veterans. He too will probably expect his wife to work then in whatever position she can find As a dishwasher forty or 50 is an old age to Start especially for a women with such a great background.
