They were loading Luggage and instruments for the Start of their second trip to Ireland for the International Rose of Tralee festival. The festival a week Long Celebration of races danc ing parades and drinking brought Back Good memo Ries for Many of them. I really like going Back because i be a lot of friends from last year there said spec. 4 David c. Nutter of Rodney Mich. I like going because of Paddy and Guin Ness said another with a laugh. Paddy is an Irish Whis key and guinness a dark ale. Despite the fact that the band had to play the first night there after a Long Day of buses planes loading and unloading Luggage and instruments and getting settled in hotel rooms most kept up their spirits. The audience got with the beat As Rock and1 danced in the streets Congo lines wound tin through the crowds and a giant Circle of Dano formed a version of an Irish Jig to the american m time was found to play not Only at organized activities but also at two hospitals and the races in Ireland too it s hurry up and wait for the Parade to Start. Impromptu concerts were Given for the crowds that gathered around the band whenever it met to wait for buses or a Parade. They stood without too Many complaints in the rain for an hour at the final ceremonies. They also managed to get in their own individual touring and partying. It s been a Long week said Goodrich As the ban loaded its gear for the trip Back. Nevertheless most people left with a new Batch of Good memories. Ireland s a Beautiful place said spec. 5 Janis a. I wish f could see More of  and from the shouts of goodbye see you next year by the local residents who gathered to see them off it seems that Many in Tralee want yet another repeat of the 33rd army band. It was the 20th year that the Small Irish town saw a mass influx of people from All Over the world for its Festi Val. For a week people jammed streets Parks and shops by Day and streets and bars by night. During the festival a Rose of Tralee was selected from Irish women or women of Irish desent represent ing towns countries and states throughout the world. This year s Winner was 20-year-old Liz Shovlin of Pittsburgh pa., a travel agent who competed against 26 other women for the Honor and  of 1,000 pounds about $2,000. The idea for the selection of a Rose is from John Ca Ball s play the Rose of Tralee. The song Sung to the Winner praises her ". Not for her Beauty alone but for the honesty in her  choosing the Rose was far from the Only attraction at the festival. The activities starting in Early afternoon and continuing through the night included bands parades and dances. A circus came to town a Small carnival offered rides and entertainment and races of All sorts were held. Gyp sies told fortunes. Besides the famed horse races the original reason for the festival there were also dog and Donkey races. It s like an Irish Mardi gras said one visitor from new Orleans. Although More than 100,000 people visited the festival the Early morning Sun usually was greeted Only by the restless movements of uncomfortable backpackers in sleeping bags along the City s streets and tiie few die hards who stayed up All night in the bars singing Irish Dit ties and drinking whiskey. After six Days of All this and a Rainy closing ceremony the revellers began packing. And Tralee another fest Down and Many others to go began cleaning up and organizing for next year.
