It said throttle sticking May be preceded by such symptoms As hard starting rough idling or stalling but it May occur without warning while the car is being driven. It advised owners of the vehicles who have the problems mentioned to have the heat tubes in their cars checked for possible cracking. The Agency said almost 270,000 Toyota with the goo cd engine were imported for Sale in the United states prior to March 1973. Nitsa said the throttle May stick Sud Denly in the open position while the vehicle is being driven. If this happens it said an Accident could result because the Driver May lose control of vehicle Speed. The engine in question contains a heat tube running through the exhaust manifold and into the choke chamber. The Agency said its investigation indicates that heat tubes in vehicles manufactured prior to March 1973 had a history of cracking. It said this allows exhaust contaminants to be drawn into the choke chamber where an accumulation of sludge can bind the throttle linkage and cause the throttle to stick in the open position. The Agency said Toyota made changes in March 1973 so the heat tube could expand and contract without cracking. Nitsa asked owners of the vehicles who have had a problem with throttle sticking to write the Agency office of defects investigation 400 seventh St. S.w., Washington d.c., 20590
