In the past mandatory retirement has come at 70 for most government workers but that provision was eliminated effective saturday by legislation signed by president Carter in april. The same Law will change the mandatory retirement age from 65 to 70 for most workers in private Industry at the end of the year. About 70 percent of the government s i Exchange announced new York a Columbia University saturday announced the first systematic Exchange program in the arts Between the people s Republic of China and the United states. Describing it As a historic move with far ranging Impact University officials said the program signalled a new major thrust in the arts by the chinese similar to ones already under Way in science and technology. This Means that the employee can decide to retire at any time Between the Ages of 65 and 70 at full pension. Sixty five remains the age for receiving social Security Benefit and after that earnings of More than $4,000 a year will re Duce social Security payments. But such persons will be earning a Bonus of 1 percent for each year worked past 65 when they eventually do retire. For exam ple if you worked until 67 your checks would be 2 percent More than if you retired at 65. Medicare will also continue to be come available at age 65. Besides private Industry the new Law will cover workers for state and local governments where the minimum mandatory retirement age also advances to 70. The change does allow private businesses to retire certain High level executives with retirement incomes of $27,000 or More at age 65. However these employees must have been at the policy making level for two years. This provision prevents Compa Nies from promoting people to High posts and then suddenly retiring them at 65.
