Judge Robert Brang placed West Berg on probation and ordered him to pay $400 in fines and court costs. But Westberg with the Aid of the american civil liberties Union fought the conviction. The Acle sent attorney Thomas Mcguire to review the Case and Mcguire filed for a new trial charging that the anti cussing ordinance was unconstitutional and that there were flaws in the conduct of the first trial. Assistant township attorney Alan Helmkamp joined in Mcguire s motion Friday then moved to dismiss the charges. I think it s Clear that the ordinance was unconstitutional Mcguire said. Redford township is the Only place i know of in the country where it s unlawful to utter an insult in Public. It s a Good thing Tiger stadium in t located there he said. Helmkamp said his decision to seek dismissal of the Case was pragmatic. If we had been successful in the District court the township would still have to go through a Long Chain of appeals maybe even up to the state supreme court he said. It also provides $65 million for the fed eral Trade commission but stipulates that none of the funds can be used to promulgate a Trade regulation concerning television advertising to children. Cereal advertisements the Etc intends to investigate such advertising particularly concerning advertisements for sugar Laden cereals aimed at children. The legislation states that the Etc does not intend to Issue any Rule on Chil Dren s advertising in fiscal year 1979." it also notes that All Trade regulation rules of the commission must be submitted for review by Congress and possible legislative veto thus assuring that the proper authorizing committees will review any Rule on Hildren s advertising prior to its effective  the Etc also is required under the legislation to include foreign automobile producers in any study of the Auto Industry. It noted that less than one third of All cars produced in 1977 were made in the United states. California s chief Justice is target of to ads Sacramento Calif. A califor Nia television viewers will begin seeing a series of emotionally charged political ads this week aimed at an unusual Campaign target the state s chief Justice. The ads Are being run by a conservative state senator . Richardson who is heading up a Campaign trying to unseat chief Justice Rose Bird the first woman to sit on the state High court. In one and a woman stands in front of an elevator. Suddenly a Young Man rushes from behind grabs her forces her inside then drags her out again. Later she is seen slumped on a bed dishevelled her belong Ings strewn about. The scene is intended to be a reenact ment of a rape Case on which Bird issued a controversial opinion. Bird has stayed put of the Campaign and her administrative aide Steve Buehl said she told him she can t respond in kind to these kinds of  but Harry Delizonna of san Jose for Mer state farm labor Board general coun Sel and chairman of the pro Bird group californians for an Independent judiciary denounced the advertisements. Bird in a separate opinion expressed her repugnance at the crime but said she was bound by the Law that limited the great bodily injury category to specific types of physical harm. The commercial does not mention the technicalities of the ruling and leaves the impression that Bird did not consider the crime a serious one.
